Three Branded ZTE MF286D Devices and OpenWrt
« on: October 07, 2022, 04:20:06 PM »

Recently there has been a flurry of activity regarding the ZTE MF286D device (available as Three banded in the UK), as our good friend Weaver plans to use one (in modem only mode) to provide a fail-over connection to his Firebrick FB2900 for those occasions when his four bonded ADSL2 circuits fail.

When looking around, elsewhere, there are mentions of both "locked" and "unlocked" Three branded devices.

Currently there are four relevant topics here in the Kitz forum --

"ZTE MF286d cat12 4g router £69.99"
"Testing the ZTE MF286d"
"Debranding the ZTE MF286d from Three to Nordic Generic"
"ZTE Framework that converts a Three UK branded MF286d to Nordic B11"

Looking in the OpenWrt Wiki there is a section for the ZTE MF286D which now appears to be (more or less) complete. Hence I wonder if just flashing the device with OpenWrt would be the simplest method for those who would like a device without any service provider restrictions or branding?

I've just flashed openwrt using ZTE update framework, I'm currently updating the modem from B02 to B12.

Will write up a full guide soon, this is quite labour intensive.

Thank you. I wonder if that might be something suitable for the Kitz Wiki?

Possibly, looks like I'd need to hand it to someone in the content team

BTW: If I’m feeling better I’ll have yet another go at getting into my ZTE with the help of my wife this weekend. I’ve been feeling very off-colour recently, exhausted and pain and other problems. But I will get there.

Okay,

So as these are currently £42 in cex, I'm off to make a few wiki pages:

That's a very good price, better than anywhere else that I can see & better than the older Huawei B535 in many cases too.

Still waiting on a good 5G router that can support OpenWRT.  I was happy with the Hauwei, until recently where it stopped passing traffic twice for no apparent reason.

Mobile routers are such a pain, having to make sure they support all the right bands, etc.
