I didn't quite realise that in Japan cats are a large part of their culture.  I was aware of the maneki-neko, but just didnt realise how much cats are loved and revered... and even feared.

I haven't watched all of the programs, but most traditional craftsmen have work cats to assist with design and bring good luck.  Interesting too how the locals feed stray cats.

Obviously our resident black cat will be well aware of all these facts of Japanese cat culture.   These progs are an interesting way to show parts of Japan in nice bite size pieces.    Thanks for the link.

There is a small Japanese island which just has one temple and its resident priest. All other occupants of the island are the many cats. The temple priest also takes care of all the cats.

The island (I forget its name) is a popular tourist destination and is served by a ferry boat almost every day.

I have heard of the cat island... it's on my daughter's bucket list.   :D

I must have been having a lapse of memory last night about what I previously knew perhaps misassociating with China.  Morphine & 3am pain muddles my brain sometimes and then I recall later. My daughter is quite into Japanese culture and cuisine...  she even started learning Japanese whilst at 6th form. It wasnt one of the subjects she took exams in, I think it was an extracurricular type activity.  All 3 of her cats have Japanese names; Satsuki is her wise old tripod cat,  Akiva is an elegant part bengal with cute markings and little Karoo who is a skilled football player.  She carries balls round like they are her babies and can catch a ball mid flight - she makes an excellent goalie :D.  Unfortunately I don't get to see them now, but I sent a shoebox full of treats this weekend after their mum came to see me.

Many Asian & Middle Eastern countries revere the cat.. and many of them have specialist cat breeds... including the particular breed that I am so enchanted with known as the sacred cat of Burma which is a temple cat.

I must pass this linkie on to my daughter, I'm sure she would enjoy it.
