Any interest in an updated firmware for Zyxel VMG1312-B10D?
« on: April 01, 2022, 03:22:28 PM »

Hi all,

I am thinking about asking Zyxel for the source code for the VMG1312-B10D 5.13(AAXA.10)C0 release.

My aim would be to update it to a release 5 linux kernel, from its current 3.4.11, and bring the other FOSS software up to date.

Would this be of interest to Kitzens if I did this?

Cheers,
    Tony

I might target Linux 4.14 kernel, as that is an LTS available for MIPS-based processor, supported to January 2024.

B*Kat might be interested as I believe he owns one of those devices.

I don't think many use the B10D variant as it has a poor performing/budget Broadcom chipset.

The favoured device for many kitizens was the higher syncing/more stable B10A variant. It has 1 of Broadcom's flagship chipsets.

There might be a couple users though.

I am thinking about asking Zyxel for the source code for the VMG1312-B10D 5.13(AAXA.10)C0 release.

Good luck with that.
The last 3 requests I've made for source codes hasn't gone well.
The 1st I was told I needed to wait till the firmware had been released for 3 months, then the 2nd I was told 6 months.
Both of which I did and was provided the source code.
The last request I made was never fulfilled despite numerous attempts.

Before that they were great at providing the source code of their firmwares within a few days of request.
It's been a couple years since I've made any such request so perhaps they changed their ways.

I had one back in 2016 - 17. However in the latter year it "went weird" on me and could not be recovered. So it was retired off to the electronics recycling and a -B10A was subsequently used.

There's a copy of aaxa5 over here http://datashed.science/misc/bcm/ZyXEL%20VMG1312-B10D%20GPL/

Aaxa8 has the web exploit thanks to the new web interface and I don't think it was ever really fixed.

@Tonygibbs Are you familiar with user Johnson’s work, discussed in earlier threads at
    https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,21273.msg413101.html#msg413101
    https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,21545.msg413178.html#msg413178 ?

The code is here, source and built for various ZyXEL modems ;
    https://github.com/johnson442/custom-zyxel-firmware/releases

Since that feb 2020 release, my friend Mr Johnson has very recently made a minor improvement at my request which involves documenting units explicitly on the y-axis on some of the graphs but this isn’t up at the about github location yet. The result is built for VMG 1312-B10A only thus far.

Thanks very much everyone for your replies.

I will look at the AAXA5 firmware meritez and use that as a starting point whilst waiting for an answer from Zyxel.

Thanks weaver for pointing me to user Johnson's work. I was aware in passing but will have more of a look at it.

Cheers,
