matching Broadcom/Lantiq with DSLAM - does it matter in 2022?
« on: February 14, 2022, 03:22:21 PM »

So over the years many have recommended that modem DSL chipset should be matched with the technology in the exchange.

That meant a modem with an Intel/Lantiq chipset with an ECI exchange, or a Broadcom chipset for other exchanges.

It is now 2022 - does this still make a difference?
  • Aren't all DSL modem's pretty much the same in their conformance to DSL standards?
  • Do the results you get pretty random and not due to the chipset combination.
It is also getting harder and harder to get Lantiq-based modems, and even finding out what the chipset has become almost impossible.
  • What's inside the new Technicolor DGA4134 for example?

It never did make a difference.
Every line is different. Some will prefer a Lantiq chipset others a Broadcom.
As well as that different chipsets from each manufacturer perform better/worse than other chipsets.

Broadcom for example have budget and premium chipsets which are night and day to each other.

I find Mediatek DSL chipsets work well on most lines

I've always been more concerned about whether it works with DSLstats.

@meritez You cannot be serious, :o have you experienced the disastrous Mediatek MT7510 found in the Asus DSL-AC68U which causes all sorts of problems on Openreach VDSL2 circuits. It has poor sync speeds and just doesn't work well with OR DLM. might be OK on very short lines but I wouldn't trust it.

Broadcom in a Huawei HG612 3B modem works for me. :)

@RealAleMadrid, I've experienced one Asus, never again:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-DSL-N66U-Dual-Band-Wireless-Gigabit/dp/B00GORC5WO

The modem would show max sync 80/20 but the throughput was 1 Mbps.

I cringe whenever I see Mediatek as any sort of chipset, SoC, modem or otherwise.  They seem to be the Realtek of SoC/modems.

That said, their WiFi chipsets don't seem to be so bad.

The Mediatek chipsets in the TP-Links don't seem too bad going by the reviews of other members but after my experience of the Asus DSL-AC68U I just couldn't use 1 again.
I think it's better used as a door stop than as a modem.

They were literally banned from using G.INP by the DLM because of the issues they caused. Though they seem to have either fixed those issues or Openreach have altered the DLM to cope with whatever badness they were causing.
Their ability to disable UPBO should see them banned entirely imo.

Definitely, that's a really stupid thing to let the end user fiddle with.

As J0hn said, some are better than others. I use Fritz!box with Lantiq connecting to a Huawei cabinet but I found that my Draytek, with an older Lantiq chipset, performs much worse.

Overall, I don't think it matters if you match chipsets.

It was a realtek, who were bought out by mediatek I think, not sure.

The vmg1312-t20b works really well.
