Well that didn't last long
« on: February 24, 2020, 11:43:09 PM »

The Ebay VMG-8924-B10A I bought a couple of weeks ago has started dropping 5ghz and speed tests are slower than the Asus DSL-n55u 5ghz connection so I have decided to dump the 8924 and purchase an Asus RT-ac57u from Ebuyer. Although if I had looked closer the 58u is cheaper on Amazon.

Cancelled the 57u from Ebuyer and gone for the 58u on Amazon. A few negative reviews on Amazon hope its better than my 55u.

I suggest forget all in one.

Use the zyxel as a modem only, and get a device for WAP.

My cheapo tlink archer c7 on openwrt, wifi performs way better than my more expensive asus ac68 ever did.

https://openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/archer-c5-c7-wdr7500.

As a bonus if you put openwrrt on it, you also have a managed switch as well.

Might be worth opening-up the 8924 and checking that the 5GHz board is properly seated, as I think it's a separate plug-in board.

Was going to post last night but thought I wouldn't as I could be reading the thread wrong but do you really think it fair to post in the for sale forum without indicating there could be something wrong with what you are selling?

I know it should be less of an issue at 5ghz, but have you surveyed the spectrum to make sure you are not on the same channel as an immediate neighbour? AUTO channel selection is notoriously bad.

The Archer C7 is not good either, its CPU is too underpowered and its WiFi performance got slower and slower as the ath10k drivers matured.
It started at 600Mbit when I first flashed it and ended up struggling to hit 400Mbit when I gave up on it.  Although I do recall it was fairly stable.

The Ubiquiti nanoHD I switched to does 600-700Mbit, which is more in line with what you SHOULD get on WiFi 5 with an 80Mhz channel width.  Although I'm not sure I'd recommend that either as apparently Zyxel make much better dedicated wireless access points for around the same price.

Basically look to the cheaper end of the business market, not residential.

Yet I only have 80mbit/sec of bandwidth so for me its not underpowered, the majority of the uk does not have those kind of speeds so is not an issue.

For banger he would be fine.

For Lan speeds, I hit around 300-400mbit/sec, which is also fine, and I be surprised if that his concern, I expect he just wants solid internet speeds.

I am also trying into account he brought the zyxel meaning his budget is probably going to be on a similar level, but yeah if he has higher requirements than 300mbit/sec, then he should get a different WAP.

I cant imagine how hes getting under 80mbps on 5ghz wifi, so I doubt his issue is wifi being the bottleneck on WAN.

LAN speeds on the other hand make much more sense to get annoyed about, if you are backing up large amounts and your network is a fraction of your disk speed, aggravation occurs.

My ac68 couldnt manage 80mpbs reliably it can happen, especially in larger homes.

Lets wait and see what banger says. :)

The thing is if its bottlenecking on the CPU, then its not optimal.  The speeds at longer range were much poorer too.

With WiFi you want as much overhead as possible so that when you get interference its not going to fall over.

When I moved the C7 across the road where there was a lot more interference, I was getting well under 80Mbit regularly when right next to it.

My N router gets better 5 ghz speeds than the 8924. The n router is an Asus DSL-N55U and I am interested in LAN speed too as on the N router at 5 ghz I get about 200mbit, the 8924 was struggling at 20 mbit.

I have devised a cunning plan. I shall test the AC58U for a week battering it with LAN tests and speed tests and see how it performs compared to the N router I have. If this is slower than my N router I will be returning to Amazon as not fit for purpose. I expecting an upgrade not a downgrade.

As  for listing the 8924 it could be used as a bridge modem, I already have 3 x 1312-B10A's configured and ready to go so dont need another spare bridge modem.

The problem with the 8924 was it had good speeds according to adapters on my 2 PCs but actual throughput was low. I dont know if that is a fault or just AC speeds. TBH I am quite peeved at ZyXel trying to constantly lock people out their own routers.
