Spyware Terminator (free)

Comment and source from Micro Mart issue 1005 p90.

Another free, and popular option is Spyware Terminator, This, like Ad-Aware and Spybot, is a malware detection and removal tool, but it also features options either missing from the aforementioned alternatives, or ones that you'd have to pay for.

Having just read an article on this program and as it came with good comments, I thought I would also post it here:
(Although I have not yet tried it)

OF, do you feel brave enough to try it and report back?

Actually I've just installed it... and interestingly enough it has the option to run in *real time, which wasn't mentioned in the MM article. :)

I'll keep you posted.

*I uninstalled windows defender because it never found anything, and the system seemed a bit zippier without it.

I have put it on my second machine and removed my old antivirus software.
I like it (at the moment) for the Real time antispyware and antivirus monitoring.
Wasn't keen on the extra tool bar on the browser so I had set that to Hide.
Will scream if I get any problems.

Actually in a round-about way it does infer that it can run in real time.
But I thought that I had miss-read it.

There's just one part of it I can't get to install, and that is the web security guard feature.  I do note however there is the option to add on Clam Antivirus - I might try that whenever I can be bothered to crank up the spare PC.

Downloaded and gave it a bit of a whirl.

Seems quite good - picked up a couple of false positives, but the interface made it easy to report back to them.
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt since the prog is fairly new and they still seem to be building up the database and the progs it queried were perhaps not those that everyone would have installed (such as an ftp server)

One of the things it did pick up as a false positive though was a valid windows system file for some reason  :-[

I'm still running it... only whirred into action when I finally took the plunge and updated from WMP10 to 11.

Very pleased with it so far.

yes - once I'd got it set up I'd forgotten it was running until it told me about an update I was about to do too.
Doesnt seem to take up too many resources either :)

Not had a problem with it all week and I like the real-time running of it. Set it & forget it.

Well I finally managed to get around to it, and yes, my first impressions are very good.
I also tried it on a couple of adult sites (nothing really hard or nasty) some of them did give a warning but some did not, although I already new the sites because I originally created a couple of them.

I think this may well be my successor to Ad-Aware 2007 & 2008, which at the moment I am not entirely happy with.

I've installed ST  and would just like to check a couple of things please.

1. Real Time Protection ....  Should I use the HIPS   ?
2. On the scans it has done so far I have the same two "threats" which are referred to as ' Invalid Start Up Items,  one is  Install Shield Update Service  located in  Registry HKLM Windows Current Version....  the other  refers to r/studios ....Both located in C.Programme files .....
Should I ignore these  ?   if so how do I put them on the 'ignore list' ?
Many thanks in advance for any help ..... :)

Hi kate

Not sure what those files are from the info provided, but I found from my first scan that it didnt seem to always id little known firmware.  It has also asked me in the past if it was ok to let windows update.
You can normally find out what the file is by doing a search on the file name it pulls up.

I cant remember the exact proceedure to send to ignore..  but iirc there was a "Move" or "Send" button underneath the window which came up after you highlighted the file in the scan report.  Once you'd clicked this button, then it gave further options what to do with it, such as send to ignore.

From the "Support & Help" section it says this with regards the HIPS setting.

What is HIPS?

Quote
HIPS, short for Host Intrusion Prevention System, is a system of real-time protection that analyzes the behavior of unknown applications rather than relying on a system of definitions to determine if a file is safe or malicious.

After enabling HIPS, Spyware Terminator creates a database of executable files on the local hard disk. After this database is created and the HIPS function is activated, any attempt by an unknown application or library to install is analyzed behaviorally. If its behavior cannot be determined as being safe, Spyware Terminator will display a warning.

So to me it sounds at it could be a good thing to enable it.

2. As per Kitz's' reply.
Although, I just selected a file for Quarantine, but afterwards it does not show up in the quarantine folder (even after a restart of the program), and with  a subsequent scan it still came back showing again.
But in your case these two files sound like registry errors, so a clean of the registry should sort them out.
