Insane CRC errors!
« on: October 10, 2016, 04:43:49 PM »

18,00 crc in under an hour!

So I am new here, with a big problem. I used to live in Cornwall where I had zen fibre 2 unlimited. I had an OR modem and a netgear, which whilst slow (42 down 12 up) never dropped out!

So this time round having moved house to near Cheshire, and apparently being really close to the cabinet, I was surprised to find I only get 30/6. New router modem came today, asus dsl-ac68u.

And so the problems begin!

Firstly I now get 30/11 which is good.

But mainly, I am getting super amount of crc errors! I need to fix the settings before the DSLAM takes me out of fastpath! Can anyone recommend some up to date settings? Here is a screenshot of line stats.

Also I dont mind buying a broadcom modem and just using the Asus as a router if need be - it says the fttc cabinet is broadcom so that might work better?

Ok, here is the first image

This is default settings for "Zen".

I then changed it to these settings

Minus the dns settings... that I found on a post for this router on Zen forums 2 years ago.

This seems to have helped, or atleast I thought so because in the time it took me to upload this image, CRC's are now over 2000, in 20 mins....

https://s12.postimg.org/iq88l8zlp/Screenshot_from_2016_10_10_15_47_30.png

So can anyone please advise what settings?

I am on the highest price zen home FTTC option, for 80/20. The cabinet is about 900m away so I am told, on overhead copper lines, I am using a microswitch? that splits phone and dsl. The master connection thingy was a single one.

Thank you

there is a thread on here about the "asus dsl-ac68u", in short use it just as a router, keep it behind another modem like the hg612, as the modem on the "asus dsl-ac68u" is poor even on lines syncing at around the max possible speed never mind a 30mbit line.

The amount of errors signifies to me that you have a line fault. The DSL-AC68U is known to be bad for lines, but it can't be causing that many CRCs. We could do with you putting in place a Broadcom modem, HG612 should do the job perfectly, just so that you can gather stats.

3767 crc's since thread was made.

Not using the modem is a bit of a cop out isnt it for a £150 router?

I don't have any hardware with me (just moved house!) :/

UPBO and G.vector should be enabled, but I don't think there are really any settings that will fix that modem.

I think the modem can be responsible for causing the CRC errors, basically if it connects at a too high speed, then the error rate will be too high.

you have a openreach modem, the hg612 is one of the 2 openreach issued models.

even if its a ECI modem, if you dont want to be DLM'd plug it back in.

Most of the £150 is for the router functions anyway.

I have now enabled G.Vector and UPBO, wierdly the speed has gone up, it now registers a max speed of 50 something mbps, although speedtest.net gives me 20 ping 28 down and 9 up (on wifi though). 400 crc in 4 minutes lmao.

I am going to hope I still have the OR modem (which is a hauwie 612 I believe) and figure out how to use that with this router. Can I flash the router for merlin etc? Because merlin say dsl models are unsupported, but I won't be using the modem part. Or is the current asus firmware actually good? I bought all this because a peado lives next door and I wanted top spec security (hopefully RADIUS supported wpa enterprise in the future) which I believe I need DD-WRT for? Hence the name of the wifi network in the screenshot...

Also to note I wonder if it could be my house wiring. For example when I arrived nothing was plugged into the master socket, no microfilter, the phone was plugged into a phone socket in the kitchen and worked. It is in a silly place as it stands for a phone base station. I have multiple phone sockets throughout the house, which all work with nothing plugged into the master socket (OR). Do these effect line quality?

The house wiring won't be helping.

Are all the other phone sockets dead when you remove the lower front plate from the master socket? If so, get a filtered faceplate. If not, some re-wiring will be needed (and you'll still want a filtered faceplate afterwards).

All phones need to be connected via a filter. If you don't have a centralised filter, then each phone needs its own filter.

Do you need those extension sockets? if not disconnect them .... if you do check connections from master socket have only 2 wires (2 and 5) and no ringer wire (3).

Why is the upstream Attn so low? ???
My max attn on down is 19db which gives me 51 ish Mb and up is 26db which yields 17Mb.

I'd be surprised if these extensions and phones aren't screwing both performance and reliability.

Get hold of an Openreach SSFP (jargon, a ‘faceplate’-type micro-filter). Choose a BT Openreach Mk2, Mk3 or Mk4, all of which are suitable for VDSL2 (i.e. FTTC). Will be a lot better per romance and reliability than lots of dangly micro-filters, and also more robust. (You would otherwise have to have dangly microfilters on every extension and the result still wouldn't be anywhere near as good, plus the fact that people might remove one somewhere and screw things up for your DSL. Going faceplate is the only hassle-free way.)

Ask for as much help as you need. They just fit onto the front of your master socket and give you a connection for telephone extension wiring and two sockets on the front, one for DSL modem and one for a phone.

If you don't want to fit one yourself, then your ISP can send an Openreach engineer out to do it for you so no hassle.

Alternatively if you are up for a small bit of DIY, we can help, and SSFPs can be had from
    https://www.run-it-direct.co.uk/shop/8/adsl-faceplates/
- only the models listed as "VDSL", which one depends on what kind of NTE5 (=master socket) you have on the wall.

There are previous threads in this forum about the various Openreach SSFPs. Note: Kitz has a page about master sockets and SSFPs which shows an older BT model that is not the right one for you - the one shown is for ADSL, not quite right for your VDSL2 service.

As an earlier poster suggested, the ultimate would be to get rid of all the extension wiring and use DECT cordless phones instead.

if you recently purchased the Asus DSL-AC68U, my immediate recommendation would be to return it for a refund. The modem in it is useless.

exchange it for a rt-ac68u which can run merlin and has all the same router functions security etc, using it behind the openreach modem is easy plug and play style just connect the openreach modem to the wan port on the rt-ac68u

Not going to exchange, it takes too long and we need the internet, even a 3 hour shortage is loss of £££.

I agree all of the wiring is messed up, am a bit confused so I will draw a diagram of how it all is for you if that helps?

Seems the router drops connection every 27mins or so, less crc errors now, still on Fastpath... lots of these through the night when no one is using it too.
The HG612 is here now though but I need to figure out how to use it infront of the Asus.
