Is this a DLM reset, or just DLM stabilising?
« on: August 19, 2016, 01:38:34 PM »

Hi,
Can anyone shed some light on what may be happening here please?

I got a surprise this morning to see that my line, which started as fastpath when installed 10 days ago but then steadily got more and more interleaved, is now back on fastpath. I'm 850m from cab, over some railway lines, so I just assume it was a noisy line.

Date| Actual Rate| Attainable Rate| PathMode| Int Depth| SNR Margin| CRC / Hour| FEC / Hour| Ping to Google| Attenuation| Power
14-Aug| 58165| 66781| FastPath| 1| N/A| N/A| N/A| 10| N/A| N/A
15-Aug| 34765| 49116| Interleaved| 503| 5.7| 1274| 1,148,160| 18| 17.6| 11.5
16-Aug| 36389| 48412| Interleaved| 2685| 5.4| 33| 551,176| 23| 17.7| 11.5
17-Aug| 37410| 47332| Interleaved| 2761| 5.0| 452| 1,658,858| 28| 17.9| 11.5
18-Aug| 34490| 47725| Interleaved| 499| 5.3| 2502| 1,159,232| 15| 17.9| 11.4
19-Aug| 34926| 40694| FastPath| 1| 5.4| 1335| 14,543| 7| 17.6| 11.4

I did request a downgrade from BT Infinity 2 to BT Infinity 1 yesterday (no point paying for 55mb+ when I can only get 30-40). Would this downgrade have caused a DLM reset back to fastpath perhaps (and therefore I should expect this DLM cycle to happen again?)

Thanks,
AM.

P.S - in another thread I was advised to change router, i've just had a zyxel, a Billion 8800 and a HG612 turn up which I was going to plug in and see how they perform against my existing Asus DSL-ac68u, but if the line stays as fastpath I may well just stick with the asus and never touch it again!

It could indeed have been caused by the product change, though not guaranteed. The speed suggests

If it was caused by the product change, then DLM will be monitoring again ... ready to stick you on an interleaved profile if it sees a need. That could be in 2 days.

Without looking in any more detail right now, or trying to justify it through details, I think you should change modem asap.

I think you're better off figuring out the state of your line with a decent modem, and lots of stats, and a fastpath line. If you keep the Asus in place, you leave yourself open to uncertainty.

You may be right actually. I figured if it aint broke dont fix it. But actually if changing from Infinity 2 to Infinity 1 caused some kind of DLM reset (a 2nd chance if you like, given the amount of times i reset the modem last week), then having a stable model in place sooner may be better.

Stats now with the zyxel:

Looks like SNRM is up, actual rate is up, but attainable rate is way down (at almost the same value as the actual, weird?).

Line attenuation is up too, hows that possible, it's exactly the same line/cable etc, just replaced the modem?

The attenuation differs in modems/routers/hubs.

The attainable rate isn't down. It's now showing what it should be. I've said a number of times recently the Asus hugely exaggerates the max attainable. I've tried about 6 modems, all were similar attainable. The Asus was 8mb higher attainable than all of them. Everyone I've seen post Asus stats has said the attainable was way higher. I've never seen it sync anywhere near it though.

My now defunct DSL AC68U regularly reckoned my attainable was over 100mbit. Every other device I've used reckons max is 73 or so, which is what I sync at now.

I don't trust anything about that device!

As others have said, the ASUS max attainable is grossly over estimated.

If you look at your figures it reports on 19th of Aug, the SNRM is 5.4dB and Interleave depth is 1.  There is nothing in the line to give 40694.
In fact because the SNRM is less than 6dB, the true max attainable should less than the sync rate of 34926..  nor more than.
