Help in accessing a HG612 modem
« on: April 01, 2016, 11:15:12 AM »

Hi guys,

I'm trying to prepare to swap out HG612 modems. But I'm having a problem accessing the new modem via the web interface.

So I got this HG612 modem from ebay a while ago and I'm trying to check the firmware.

Unpackaging the modem I noticed the guy put a sticker over LAN2 saying not in use.

I unpealed the sticker and plugged an ethernet cable in there. I noticed when I did that the right light of the port keeps flashing. I'm not sure if this is activity?

On connecting it to the laptop (I don't have any of this connected to the internet), I typed in 192.168.1.1 to open the default page. The browser gives the standard can't connect screen. I tried plugging the ethernet cable in to LAN1 and still the same situation.

Anyone got any thoughts or ideas?

The "not in use" sticker is how they are supplied from OR. Assuming you have a suitable IP address set on your laptop it looks very much like it has not been unlocked yet.

I did wonder that as it seemed a bit too neat in the box.

I just tried setting the laptop to a static ip address to see if that made any difference. But it didnt.

I'll have a go at unlocking this. Think I'll bring the laptop upstairs, I'm getting too fit / tired to run up and downstairs lol

All the info you need. http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/hg612unlock.htm

Instructions for the laptop config on NIC see http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/hg612hacking.htm

"Connect PC to LAN2 socket
Configure the ethernet NIC of your PC with IP address 192.168.1.100." ---- see link above for full details ---

EDIT:
See if you set your NIC to static 192.168.1.100 and do what you wanted without unlocking

Ok, I've managed to unlock the modem and flash it with the latest firmware.

Is there any other settings I need to change on the modem?

I've disabled QoS because of comments on a thread that turning it off seemed to give a better sync speed.

Is there anything else I need to do?

I want it to just act as a modem, as I'm going to connect my router to it.

Ok, just reading the kitz page. I'm thinking that btagent will still be on.

If I connect to the modem via telnet do I just type;

killall -KILL start btagent

at the command line?

No, it should be fine like that.

If you want to monitor the stats, you may have to adjust the LAN IP address to fit your network, but you may not.

Thanks Dray,

I added a question about btagent. Will it be on, or will it be turned off when I updated the firmware?

If it'll still be on, what is the actual telnet command to turn it off?

kitz command is a little confusing as its 2 lines  :(

If you used the _webgui firmware, then BTAGENT is already disabled. You can see it in the PTM list as 301, Pending disconnect.

A quick comment. If you delete the VLAN tagged 301 that will completely neuter the BTagent, by removing its communication channel.

I'll look in to that. It's good that the firmware gets things all setup.

I thought the process would have been more complex.. I'm thankful it wasnt lol
