How long did your old ISP email take to expire?
« on: March 10, 2016, 10:43:08 PM »

How long since you left an ISP have you still got/had access to that email address?

I still have access to my Pipex email address since I left just before Tiscali took over. I think I left in 2006/07. So thats around 10 years ago!

So what's the longest past isp email address you've had access to?

My late father was with AOL/talk talk.

It is three years since his death and I wound up the account but last time I checked, his old aol account was still accessible, his mailbox still populated.   I wish it would vanish, but haven't the heart to delete it all.   :(

I suspect the reason they do it is simply the mailbox is of commercial value to the ISP.   The fact that my cousin Doreen emailed my father about her Vauxhall Astra is probably of no interest, but much of the mail lying around in old accounts will hold data that has saleable commercial value, eg to advertisers.

I had my old BTinternet one for about 5-6 years - but then they started wanting something like £1.75 per month so I ditched it.   I believe they have recently increased it to £5 pm.

I also managed to keep my main Plusnet email for the 6 years I was at Be.  Although unfortunately I lost my 'kitz' plusnet one because I accidentally forgot to check mail for a couple of months which is what keeps it active.  That can never be recreated now as their systems now require a min of 5 chars. :/

My oldest email address which dates back to 1996 with u-net was still active despite me leaving in about 2002 and them having been taken over by several other companies since. I last checked that within the past couple of years, but dont know about now.  I used to automatically transfer the POP3 details in Outlook on each PC install, but after a re-install of my OS about 2 years ago I never bothered..  and I cant remember the login details now to check.

Well my BT internet account is only just ending now. When they asked for money to keep it going, I told them I was not interested. But it continued to work, although I phased it out it's use anyway. I need a replacement for it for a  VOIP account though. So will get a Hotmail ( or whatever it is called now ) to replace it.

I've only lost one and that was the first one I ever had with a specialist ISP that no longer exists, though I kept it for years after moving on, they never removed it until shutting up shop.
That said, I've never been with BT and right from the start had my own domain as well, the ISP email has always been secondary.

And, like Kitz, I kept my PlusNet email alive while with Be and it carries on still now I have returned.

I've never ever used an isp's email. Twenty years ago, I used work email all the time. For the last fifteen years or so I've used a small independent service provider for ~£10 pa.

I forgot to mention in my last post that all the O2 Email addresses for EVERYONE using them, will be ceased in June. So any friends using O2 Email will be lost to you unless new Email addresses are obtained from other providers...............
