FTTCBNYC (Fibre To The Corner, But Not Yet Connected)
« on: September 02, 2015, 02:03:25 PM »

I'e discovered another BT Fibre service!

I live in a rural area - we're always had terrible ADSL speeds as we are 2kms from the cabinet and the cabinet is probably 3kms from the exchange. We recently got an Infinity cabinet and that has led to the min-blowing speeds you can see in my signature.

I recently discovered that Openreach have actually blown fibre through to a new concrete manhole about 100 up the road from me. It went in about 3 months ago - I got some pictures of what was going in and it's definitely fibre.

So far, however, nothing has been connected to it. There's no splitter in the manhole, just a fibre joint, cables and a pair of other cables running underneath that I'm told are standard phone line bundles.

So... my (obvious) question is: how do I find out when this is going to be connected? I'm assuming Openreach didn't blow the fibre through to our rural road with about 10 houses and some farmyard businesses on it just for laughs, so they must have assumed someone would come and provide connections to said houses and business at some point?

And... as our road is ~2kms from the nearest cabinet and we are served by overhead cables, are we likely to get a new cabinet and FTTC/last yards copper or more likely to get FTTH with the last yards fibre slung over the existing poles to the small number of properties?

Thanks!

It could have been run in specifically for one customer who paid a fortune for it, perhaps a local business or lottery winner.

Possibly... although I don't believe the fibre is connected to anyone/thing.

This still takes me back to the original thought, though... if I were selling that service, I might think to myself 'now I've done the hard work/expensive bit, perhaps I should go and see if the other properties and small businesses here want to pay for access to this?'

I know BT and Openreach are like left hand/right hand but putting the infrastructure in and then just leaving it unconnected is beyond even them.

FTTC is Fibre To The Cabinet, not Corner.

FTTC is Fibre To The Cabinet, not Corner.

I think that is part of the joke.  :D ;)

So would that be the site of an aggregation node, or a new cabinet?

AlecR - <jk>if it's got the word 'fast' in it, no we will have nothing to do with that. As far as I know BT only ever trial new services and rollout upgrade to people who have already have access to 100Mbps+, send 10 emails a year and watch 1 episode of Eastenders they missed on Christmas Day on iPlayer.</jk>

Haha - tagged appropriately. Although most good jokes are based on the truth, right? (I'm <2mi south of the M25 and you can see what my line stats look like).

@SimonSays
I do feel for you.

I was on 3.5 MB/s until 11 months ago.
Before that it was 2MB/s :(

Many years ago, everyone I worked with had 10, 12, 16 +++ MB/s ...... some even had FTTC or FTTP.
They could not understand why working from home was not good for me.
(We worked all hours to match the Customers who were global, so could justify working from Home at times. Not Me!).

Not a lot you can do but wait for BT or Virgin or someone to provide something better.  :( :'(

I did seriously consider moving South to somewhere that had 'real Internet' :)
Couldn't afford the cost of Housing etc
(I am in the 'Sunny' North West ....... Yeah, in my dreams  )

Thanks, Aadvark. :)

Does anyone think the arrival of a new fibre joint in the ground 100yards up from me signifies that *something* is going to happen, or do Openreach just put these things in for fun/practice?

Might be some clues on www.roadworks.org don't forget to change the date period to longer than the default.
