You need to hit the FULL/EXPAND button and also Gain to get up to ca 4km or so....

5.1 Connect the pair under test to the LINE sockets using one of the test leads provided.
(Normal operation only requires the use of the LINE terminals. For information on the
REF sockets see section 7).
5.2 Switch the Tester ON by depressing the ON button. The display should appear on
the screen.
5.3 Adjust the CONTRAST control to obtain a bold, clear display.
5.4 Observe the trace display for evidence of a reflected pulse.
5.5 Adjust the Tester sensitivity by using the GAIN + and GAIN - controls to obtain a
clearly visible reflected pulse. The BALANCE control can be used to position the
trace on the screen at high GAIN settings
5.6 Move the cursor by using the left and right, fast and slow cursor buttons and set it to
the point where the reflected pulse just departs from the horizontal (figures 2 and 3).
5.7 Depress the FULL/EXPAND button to obtain the expanded trace, which is confirmed
by the word EXPAND replacing the word FULL on the screen.
5.8 Use the cursor left and right controls to accurately position the cursor.
5.9 The distance to fault in metres is displayed on the screen. REMEMBER TO DEDUCT
THE LENGTH OF THE TEST LEAD.
5.10 If the fault is close to the near end and the reflected pulse cannot be clearly identified
then refer to section 6.
5.11 Revert to FULL display by using the FULL/EXPAND button to test another pair.

I'll email you some manuals... Done

EDIT: the other thing is that on an ECI cab even a JDSU I've had on mine can't see the Cab/DLM.... There is apparently no 1Hz beacon  transmitted like the Huawei cabs do...

The trace attached is showing just the area within the square box at top left... and the one below that is the full trace

I did crank the gain right up and use the full/expand option, but there was still nothing showing above 80 meters.

Chrysalis, it does show distance, it can be clearly seen on the screen shots.

Maybe one of the experts can suggest what you need to prod to get it reading correctly. It's physically the same unit used for my example photos for anyone that doesn't realise...

Your photos look as though the info at the top of the screen is hidden or otherwise not viewable, don't recollect being able to do that.

I do see the 15m but clearly your line isnt 15m long.

Have you tried pressing the DISPLAY button?

The display button toggles between full screen and split screen, with split screen mode the top section shows the full line up to 4 km and the lower section shows it zoomed in. So it's a combination of the full screen and expanded screen.

BC has stated that if the joints at the PCP/DSLAM are very good then it's unlikely they will show.

Chrysalis, the measurements in the photos range from 3 to 80 meters

Yes , that's why I asked you try try it so you could see all the way to 4km  ;)

My line also shows nothing, nor does it on a JDSU HST-3000C. BS has confirmed it looks fine. It's on Hi gain below to get the range past 700m which is the estimated line length although that is currently being checked for me to within a few metres.

Er no - those pics are from a current JDSU HST-3000C box.... It's like the difference between a rudimentary meter that just measures voltage and a high end multimeter with built in DSLstats... It can even act as a modem (which it is doing in the first screen grab)...
