Billion 8800NL or HH5b on a Huawei cab
« on: May 09, 2015, 04:06:46 PM »

Hi folks,

I'm at last getting fibre (via BT) in a couple of days time, but am debating whether to connect using my current Billion 8800NL or the Home Hub 5b I've received.

We're connected to a Huawei cabinet that is about 250m away.

Does it matter too much which router/modem I plump for?

Thanks.

Fortunately you have not been supplied with a problematical BT HH5A:-X

My preference would be to use the Billion 8800NL as it can be completely configured as you wish and does not contain the BTAgent, not is it locked to a specific Beattie configuration.  ;)

Thanks for that burakkucat. I hadn't even heard of BTAgent, but after a bit of a Google I see what you mean.

Billion is it then... I'll make sure I get it flashed to a more up-to-date firmware before I start on the fibre connection.

Yes, that is a very good idea. :)

And if you do not mind, I'll take this opportunity to make the recommendation that anyone configuring any type of modem/router, for any type of DSL service, should do so with the device disconnected from the line.

It turns out that the newer firmware has been pulled anyway. When the time comes, I'll just update the DSL settings - disconnected from the line.  :)

Just purrfect.  :)

There is, of course, one other reason for choosing the Billion 8800NL over the BT HH5B and that is the Billion is known to be "well supported" by both of the monitoring utilities (from Roseway and Bald_Eagle1).

Thanks for the heads up on the monitoring tools - will certainly check those out.

I think the HH is a better router, but it has the same chipset as the Billion, albeit I find the HH syncs slightly faster. The HH also has better wireless and routing performance. You could always use the Billion as a modem and run it into the HH.
Personally I have used the Billion, but now use a Zyxel 8924 as it is a better router, IMO, and has better firmware.
Unless stats are important (and of course they are!) I would use the HH Type B!
