New FTTC service - but weird speed test results
« on: April 28, 2015, 03:46:10 PM »

My new FTTC service was activated on the 24th April, an upgrade from ADSL.
Cab is about 110m from NTE (known o/h and u/g cable routes) and Zen's TG589 shows synch at 79.999 and 19.989.
So far, so good.

What I expected any speedtest to show was a swift climb to the max and then a steady reading.
I normally get this on the upload graph which climbs quickly to aroud 18 and then continues in a fairly level rate.
Download is completely different.
It climbs slowly at first then accerates more rapidly to around 38 - 44 about halfway through the test
Most of the time it hangs around this figure but occasionally climbs as high as 75 at the end.

There are significant variations depending on the browser used.
Chrome and Firefox hardly ever reach above 70, but Internet Explorer often reaches 75 at the end of the test.
Average dowload speeds have never exceeded 66 irrespective of the browser used, time of day, or speedtest site.

Would the readers of the forum enlighten me with what their speedtests show ?

All credit to Zen support, they have spent hours on the phone with me trying various different things but to no avail.
As the average download most times just exceeds the 40 mark they are meeting contractual obligations, but certainly not this customers expectations.

Thanks

What equipment are you running the speedtest on?
What (if any) antivirus / software firewall is running?
Are you testing wired direct, via homeplugs or wireless?

Could you post the results of a thinkbroadband speed test. The graphs that gives might be informative.

Samsung R730 laptop (Win7) is direct into router over ethernet.
There is no difference if I connect via wireless, or via my Devolo powerline system or even wireless from my Nexus 5.
There is no difference if I use my sons desktop on Vista.

Results of a few minutes ago - a bit slower than usual

With Firefox

With Internet explorer

A few minutes later

Only antivirus is Microsoft one.
Malwarebytes gave a clean run yesterday.

Ive edited your post to show direct images of the speedtests.   I notice that the first 2 are only httpx6.   The http1 v http6 are normally more useful for diagnostics.

This is mine

I may be jumping to conclusions but your last graph looked a little like mine when I had an RWIN issue which limits single thread speed tests to a maximum of 30Mbps.  I dont think I ever saw the jaggedness though on the httpx6, but that said I normally only do httpx1-v-httpx6 tests.

Theres a diagnostics test you can try at http://myspeed.visualware.com/index.php
Select Quality and UK (you have to do this twice!)   You will also have to give it permission to use Java.

The quality test is a little wonky because it is limited to about 40Mbps, but it was this site which first gave me a clue that something was wrong with my RWIN.

After the test is completed,  look for the link in the first tab which says 'test result #'.  click on it and it should give you a page url something like http://mcssjc.visualware.com/myspeed/db/report?id=xxxxx  which you can save or link to.   From that page you can also request Analyze this test

I would be interested to know what the http://speedof.me/ tester reports for your throughput.

Hi

I would try resetting the network stack to make sure it hasn't had changes made to it, for example tweaks made to benefit an ADSL connection will often cause problems when on a faster FTTC connection.

Regards

Phil

  • To open a command prompt, click Start and then type cmd in the Search programs and files box.
  • Under Programs, right-click the CMD.exe icon, and then click Run as administrator.
  • When the User Account Control box appears, click Yes.
  • At the command prompt, enter the following command, and then press Enter: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
Note If you don't want to specify a directory path for the log file, run the following command instead:
    netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
  • Restart the computer.

Thanks for all the responses.

@Kitz. - your results are what I want !
@burakkucat - the speedof.me test shows a slow climb to the usual Max, but interestingly it is not smooth but contains a series of drops to almost zero before  continuing the climb.
I will test my laptop on the local PC repair man's FTTC service to hopefully eliminate this and I have an open reach modem on its way so I can test with an alternative router/modem setup.
Should the fault still exist once these items have been eliminated then I will expect Zen to pursue to rectification.
If they are unable I will request a MAC code.

Interestingly I was told of another Zen user a few miles away who has exactly the same issue . . . .

Will update again in a few days time.

Update on Saturday 2nd May

Laptop was checked by by local PC guru who demonstrated that it was showing exactly the same speedtest results as his PC on his FTTC service.
Laptop thus eliminated as possible cause.

My ECI modem off fleabay arrived this morning.
Connected up to the wan port of my TP-Link TD-W8968 router.
BIG improvement
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results.html?id=143056440005957018928

Speed up to 55Mb with an almost instant rise and steady download/upload.

Not quite up to where I expect it but I will see if the ALM changes anything over the next few days.

Meanwhile back to Zen "your TG589 router is crap the culprit"

Cheers
Tommy
