I laymans terms, VDSL bandwidths don't travel anywhere near as well as ADSL bandwidths over Copper/Ali cable.
Therefore no, the reduction of cable between Exchange and Cabinet won't make any difference at all I'm sorry to say.

VDSL = Very Fast Broadband
ADSL = Normal Broadband (What you are on now).

Thanks, although that's disappointing to hear. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what it estimates when the line has been installed. I've had a little read, and apparently there are ways of adjusting the SNR on your router, do you think this is something I could try for my current slow ADSL connection? Many thanks.

Also, do any of you, personally know anyone who has achieved a stable and acceptable speed on 2.5km of FTTC? Thanks again.

If memory recalls, the highest I've ever managed to get FTTC synch on was a 2.3Km circuit at approx 5Meg. The EU was over the moon as they were just about scratching 1/4 Meg on ADSL ? There was a heck of a lot of 0.9mm underground cable on this route though.
Percentage wise, D-side cables (from the Cab to premises) are mainly 0.5mm. The thicker the cable ….. the lower the losses …… the greater the speeds. Which is why I mentioned a few posts back about knowing the cable sizes of your own D-side 'run' ??

Thanks Black Sheep. I will still keep my fingers crossed, and I will try and find out what type of cable it is. Not really sure who I'd ask though. Thanks again.

If you PM me your landline number, I may be able to help ..... it all depends on the data-bases needed ?? Or, even your postcode might see me finding out a bit more ?? Kitz will verify my integrity (hopefully  :P ;D).

If you're not comfortable with this, it's not a problem at all.  :)

This may be helpful with distance measurement.

200 - 300 meters  = 79999/19999
400 - 500 meters  = 59999/16999
600 - 700 meters  = 49999/13999
800 - 900 meters  = 39999/9999
1000 - 1100 meters = 29999/6999
1200 - 1300 meters = 19999/2999
1400 - 1500 meters = 14999/1999

these are my predictions to primary connection point (PCP) to end-users premises when using VDSL2, it's just my estimate  :D

Thank you so much everyone that replied on here. All your information is really useful, and I really appreciate how helpful everyone has been! (Especially as I'm a novice to this stuff)

In terms of the FTTC, Black Sheep has worked out that it is in fact nearly 2.6km to the cabinet, so I'm not overly optimistic on this front, but I guess it's a matter of waiting and finding out.

I'm going to try the tests using the master socket test port when I get home, and perhaps this will make a difference. The BT line was only connected to the house about 4 years ago, so I don't think it will just be a case of an old socket (is a faceplate different to the main socket that BT fits?)

I was also wondering if anyone could advise me on a router. I noticed this one for example http://www.amazon.co.uk/Billion-8800NL-Gigabit-Wireless-Router/dp/B00K6D2ESM/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1421710448&sr=1-3&keywords=billion you can adjust the SNR yourself, is this something any of you would recommend?

The Billion 8800NL is an excellent choice, and it's future proof for when (if) you do get FTTC. Tweaking the SNRM is possible with it, but needs to be done with care. The information you've provided on your connection does suggest that you could get a significant increase in your speed this way, but I recommend that you monitor your connection for longer before doing this.

Thanks Tickmike, seems to be more than I envisaged.

That sounds like good advice Roseway, I've currently got BT Homehub 3 - would the Billion be a big upgrade from this?

People seem to praise the WiFi performance of the BT Homehubs, and the 8800NL may not be quite as good (but entirely adequate in a normal sized home). The ADSL performance of the 8800NL should be better, but I couldn't put a number on it.

I don't think the wifi would be a significant upgrade to the HH3, but it is a better router overall being immune to the BTAGENT software interfering with it.
