I finally get to try out the DSL stats thingy!
« on: May 08, 2014, 09:37:12 PM »

My HG612 arrived a little while back but despite having a plethora of crap ADSL connections to try it on, most were too inaccessible (grandparents/parents) for me to give it a proper shot.

I have, however, found a friend! :D

I'll let the stats do the talking:

Code: [Select]
Stats recorded 08 May 2014 21:21:41

DSLAM/MSAN type:        IFTN:0x71c6 / v0x71c6
Modem/router firmware:  AnnexA version - A2pv6C035m.d22g
DSL mode:                G
Status:                  Showtime
Uptime:                  20 hours 52 min 20 sec
Resyncs:                0 (since 07 May 2014 23:35:59)

Downstream Upstream
Attenuation (dB):        56.0 31.5
Connection speed (kbps): 4064 576
SNR margin (dB):        7.6 6.0
Power (dBm):            18.4 12.6
Interleave depth:        64 2
INP:                    1.43 0.76

RSCorr/RS (%):          0.0306 0.0000
RSUnCorr/RS (%):        0.0030 0.0000
ES/hour:                5.19 0

In no particular order:

I would like to try and make improvements so that interleaving and INP and reduced if not gone. Probably impossible? :) Native ping to bbc.co.uk is about 36-38ms. The ISP is TalkTalk who I believe will make all the horrid ping extenders vanish if I ask them but I'd like to see if some of it could be gotten rid of by tarting the line up a bit before I consider that route :)

When I first had a squint at their modem, it was showing 60,000 HECs :o I've disconnected two extensions, moved the modem as far away from the TV as possible and as much powery type stuff from behind the TV as I could. This has resulted in about 1.5dB extra DS margin.

As far as I can see, the house is fed by an underground cable, comes out of a duct thing by the front of the house. It has a BT plastic thing on the front which I was tempted to remove to have a look inside. I am hoping there is no splitter of some sort there but I notice further along a 'second' black cable appears. I thought the underground cables were more resistant to noise/AM but at least one of the blanked tones I checked is an AM station!

The upstream looks a bit dodgy too I was thinking? Anyway, I'd appreciate any feedback on this stuff, thanks :D

I don't know where your guinea-pig is located but they are taking a massive hit at 279 kHz (tone 64 - 65), which is probably the result of any one of the following broadcasters --

Code: [Select]
Freq Station Name                 Transmitter Site Power (Watts)

279 GRTK Sakhalin / R Rossii Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk 1000000
279 Belaruskaye Radio 1         Sasnovy          500000
279 Buryatskaya GRTK / R Rossii Ulan-Ude          150000
279 Sverdlovskaya GRTK / R Rossii Yekaterinburg          150000
279 Turkmen Radio 1         Asgabat          150000
279 GRTK Altay / R Rossii         Gorno-Altaysk           50000

It makes BBC Radio 4 (from Droitwich) on 198 kHz look puny by comparison!  :o

Looking at the tones available for use, I would definitely recommend that ADSL2 (or even G.Dmt) mode be configured and not ADSL2+ mode.

I'm surprised boost has significantly higher SNR on tone 64-65 despire significantly higher QLN.

I wasn't sure if tone 64 is the ADSL1 pilot and possibly doesn't get used? Or is that crazy looking spike on the QLN what you mean? Not really sure how to read the QLN/HLOG.

Guinea pig is near Caerphilly though :)

Tone 72 is pretty weird? Seems to show high SNR but just 2 bits loaded? Pretty sure it's done that over the last three synchs or at least one of the tones very near to it!

Yes, it was to that which I based my observations.

Not really sure how to read the QLN/HLOG.

For the QLN plot, lower is better (less noise). For the HLOG plot, starting high at low frequencies and gradually decaying towards the higher frequencies is good. Over the spectrum of tones 0 -185 (ish) it looks quite normal. From tone 187 upwards there is essentially no sensible signal.

Hmm . . . Then perhaps that spike at 279 kHz (in the QLN graph) is a phantom artefact?

I would disregard that one altogether. It's clearly something that is not explainable!

Tried ADSL2 and 2+. Fails to synch on both. Would there be a cost to get this line onto a proper ADSL2 service with TT I wonder? Wonder why it doesn't 'just work' :)

New stats:

Code: [Select]
Stats recorded 08 May 2014 22:41:35

DSLAM/MSAN type:        IFTN:0x71c6 / v0x71c6
Modem/router firmware:  AnnexA version - A2pv6C035m.d22g
DSL mode:                G
Status:                  Showtime
Uptime:                  3 min 1 sec
Resyncs:                0 (since 07 May 2014 23:35:59)

Downstream Upstream
Attenuation (dB):        56.0 31.5
Connection speed (kbps): 4192 640
SNR margin (dB):        6.4 6.0
Power (dBm):            18.4 12.6
Interleave depth:        64 2
INP:                    1.39 0.69

RSCorr/RS (%):          0.0171 0.0000
RSUnCorr/RS (%):        0.0140 0.0000
ES/hour:                5.43 0

INP has dropped a smidge. YEY! Upstream has recovered to it's former 600k~ before I started meddling (probably resynched 5 times yesterday).

The weird bitloading spike appears to have moved to tone 79?!

Fresh QLN and HLOG too...

As far as TT are concerned, they provide an ADSL2+ service from their MSAN. Due to the line conditions, the modem/router can only achieve synchronisation in G.Dmt mode.

How do I know? Because I also have TT as my CP.  ;)

Downstream Upstream

SNR margin (dB):        4.8 7.4

INP:                    0.50 0

RSUnCorr/RS (%):        0.0072 0.0000
ES/hour:                0 0

As can be seen from the tones available, I am able to make use of ADSL2 mode.

The 2 bit load despite good SNR is indicative of a test-tone.   TalkTalk LLU in particular use test tones, which arent necessarily at the same frequency each time.  Most TT users display a Test tone in addition to the pilot tone, iirc weve discussed it on here before and cant find any particular pattern to which tone they use - ie area.

Tone 64 is the standard pilot tone. No bits will be loaded @ 276kHz

TalkTalk don't use the standard pilot tone either, and I agree they they seem to move their test tones around.
