How do my stats look?
« on: January 13, 2008, 04:42:34 PM »

Hi all,

I got connected to bethere the other day and managed to get around 5.5 Down. I phoned them up and said I think we could do better and the guy said he was going to change something from 6 to 3, but this was the max and only thing they could do - i assume it was something to do with my SNR.

This then got me to around 8.5. I then changed my BT faceplate to be one with the ADSL as well and it has managed to now get 9.5 as seen below.

Do you think there is anything else I can do to increase my speed or do you think my line stats look ok?

Thanks for your help! :

Glad you got your number back..  That seems pretty good for a 41dB line to me :)

However, I notice that your SNR Margin is a bit low and youre obviously syncing a bit near the edge.. as can also be seen by the amount of errors you are incurring.  Does this seem to be having any inpact on your surfing?
[oops sorry - just spotted they seem to have changed your target SNR from 6dB to 3dB - which is why it is low]

I notice the router has only been up for around 7/8 hours, so its only right to point out that things could get a bit worse as the evening progresses and there is a chance that you may loose sync..  it depends how much your SNR fluctuates by.

Since you already appear to have done all the usual stuff (ie the faceplate etc), I think you may have reached the limitations of your line.

If things do get a bit "rocky" later on tonight, you may have to sacrifice a bit of the speed for stability. Fingers crossed for you that its ok.
Other than that - its looking ok so far :)

Thanks kitz!

Surfing and general downloading seems to be fine......havent really had any disconnects that I have noticed - it was only up for 7/8 hours because that is when I moved the BT/Adsl face plate.

I couldnt believe I got nearly a whole meg from using a face plate instead of a normal micro-filter!

Will keep you posted.....

Not too uncommon - glad it worked for you :)

 I didn't realise they could make that sort of difference over a plug in. Which make are the face plates ...  adsl nation or clarity or ... ?  Were the plug ins poor quality cheapies or would it even make that difference if they were good ones ?

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a 'face plate' and what is a 'normal micro-filter', and what is the difference?

What's being talked about here is a replacement faceplate for the telephone master socket. This faceplate (here's an example) includes an ADSL filter and connections inside for filtered extension wiring. This effectively disconnects the extension wiring from the ADSL signal, so it can't degrade the ADSL by picking up interference.

PS The one in the example also includes connections for unfiltered extensions, which can be used with high quality CAT 5e cable or similar to carry the ADSL signal to another room. But in the simple case you would just plug the router into the socket on the faceplate.

Thanks for the info Eric.

Would it be worthwhile changing my phone socket over do you think?

If you've got an NTE5 master socket (i.e. the lower half of the faceplate is separately removable), and if you've got wired-in extensions, then quite probably yes. That's assuming that it's physically practical to locate the router close to the master socket, or to get involved with some more complicated wiring.

My router is plugged into the master socket  I don't have any extensions running off it.

If you don't have any extensions then a filtered faceplate will make no difference.
