HG612 Modem Stats r1.1 issue
« on: January 09, 2014, 02:28:28 PM »

Gents,

Connection is awesome, but I was keen to get some logging up and running. I've got myself a HG612 (and unlocked it) and setup dslstats - works wonderfully.

I was hoping to get HG612 Modem Stats r1.1 running too alongside, but I just can't get it going.

Configured with all the right paths and IP, etc, but when I click 'Run GraphPD' on the settings editor, it just sits there and I get this:

Code: [Select]
Please enter the period to plot ===>

 ***************************************************
 *                                                 *
 *  The period to plot was not specified.          *
 *  The default period of 1440 m will be plotted.  *
 *                                                 *
 ***************************************************

You entered (or it was determined) a period of 1440 m

Log file name wasn't entered - Using default modem_stats.log and subfolders

RROR! C:\HG612_Modem_Stats_Programs-r1.1\Ongoing_Stats\modem_stats.log does NOT
exist or could NOT be opened for reading

ress any key to exit

I setup a scheduled task and checked all creds were fine, so it should be recording?

If I click Run Snapshot Stats, it launches and produces the following and sits forever with GRAPH6.exe chewing up 25% of the CPU time until I kill it using taskmanager. this is the output:

Code: [Select]
Creating log file Plink_20140109-1424.log

Running SBS2011 Essentials, X64. It's 8GB RAM and has a XEON processor inside - so it shouldn't be slow (I'd hope).

Where to start, have I done something daft?

DSLstats has no issues running or capturing data and network is all fine too.

Help   :'(

(reason I'm looking to get some recording on the go, is because I notice the little ECI cab up the road has been surrounded by lots of yellow paint - I expect it'll be upgraded to the bigger cab soon, so I want to make sure it doesn't affect me!!!)

1440 minutes is just a day. Has the modem stats utility gathered a day's worth of data?

If not, that may be the cause of the problem. Could it be attempting to plot the graphs without sufficient data?  :-\

Had left the scheduled task running for about 5 days in total.

Where is all the data kept.....?

Outgoing stats has three files:

error.log
graphpd_ERROR.LOG
xlogfile.txt

current stats folder has a number of folders inside.

Not sure really. Tried setting the value to 3 d and 3d but no joy there either.

Just make sure you have installed the most upto date files from BaldEagle, I think this is the link for those files http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=13078.0;attach=10708

you will need to replace these files and remove the older ones, the location for those files resides in the default folder C:\HG612_Modem_Stats\Scripts.

Outgoing stats has three files:

Just checking that the above isnt a typo and it should be "Ongoing_Stats"

This folder should contain a "modem_stats.log" which is where all the main data is kept from each run.
This log can get quite large but you should be able to view it in notepad - or preferably notepad++ to check that data is being recorded.

If data is being recorded to that log ok, then the program should set up daily log folders which graph the days stats.
An example folder name would be
C:\Users\kitz\Desktop\Connection\HG612_Modem_Stats\Ongoing_Stats\Ongoing_Stats_20140109-2358-1Day

I hope Mr & Mrs Eagle are having a great holiday, in his absence I'll see what I can do.

door_bell, first of all make sure you have the latest programs that NewtronStar posted, and also the latest version of the GUI (formerly the settings editor) from here.

Have you checked in task scheduler that the task is running without any errors, last run time should be the current minute, and the last run result should be 0x0, be advised that task scheduler does not auto refresh - just hit F5 to refresh it.

It may be a good idea to delete your task and use the new GUI to set it up again, also verify that the directory tab doesn't have any highlighted folders. Also double check that the modem IP is correct, and the other tabs have their settings as required.

If you'd like to post the following logs/files as a Zip file I'll take a look and see if I can spot any problems. If things are not running correctly, or you've been using an older version you may not have all of the following.

From the Scripts folder
  • Login_events.TXT
  • HG612_stats.ini
From the Ongoing_Stats folder
  • xlogfile.txt
  • modem_stats.log
  • graphpd_ERROR.LOG
  • ERROR.LOG_file_ERROR.TXT
  • ERROR.LOG
From the Current_Stats folder
  • GRAPH6_ERROR.LOG
  • Current_ERROR.LOG

The modem_stats_Log contains the harvested stats, it should have one line for every minute it's been scheduled to run for, which ideally should be 24/7.

Right, first off thanks for the assistance to all.

I decided I'd got in a bit of a pickle after thinking I'd been on the latest version when it obviously wasn't. So I've removed it all and started again.

- downloaded 1.1 from the forum link - check
- Updated the programs from NewtronStar's link - check
- Downloaded the new GUI - check

Set it up so all the paths were correct, updated IP of modem and created a new scheduled task. All looked good.

I clicked on the run snapshot data and it threw an exception error - now I've got a red button that says "GUI error occured click to open error log". If I click, I get this:

Code: [Select]
10/01/2014 11:29:19 - Error reading modem log.

Ahhh, I edited the properties of the app so it ran as Admin - it's gone through without error. I think I'm there now.........the GUI has some updated information about the connections and errors. I think it's all looking good - will leave it and see how it gets on!!!

Attached a shot - all looks grand!

Thanks, as always :)

Glad you've go it working, nice attainable rates which should give some headroom before being affected by cross talk.

Don't worry about the GUI error, its a bug I need to fix. That particular bug will only affect a new modem log.

Hopefully BE will release an updated package sometime, which then save having to download the latest version from here.

If you wish to receive beta updates for the GUI make sure you select the correct options on the GUI settings tab.

Is there a typical loss that one would expect? I only read about crosstalk after actually singing on the dotted line - learnt a hell of a lot, but I suppose it should have been before. That's not to say I'm not happy with what I have.

It's a bit of a lottery really, ins't it.

Be interesting to see what happens when they load up the cabinets. We had one of the smaller ECI one's up the road - from reading, we were never actually meant to get it under BT's initial choices of where to make money. When I drove past it today (it becomes an obsesions, doesn't't it.... ), I see that it's been marked out in yellow paint for either one next to it or a bigger one to replace it. Guess the old folk around here DO like fast broadband. So that's double the connections.

I do hope I'm not patched over to a bad pair when they make the move.....which is why I was so keen to get the logging up and running.

Getting someone to listen if there is a problem is the other matter. Still, got to stay positive.

There is really no typical loss, the fact that you have good speeds means you are close to the cabinet which means you are less likely to be hit by crosstalk. It all depends on how close another FTTC/Broadband line is in the bundle and how far they run together to how much it affects you.

There is good news, BT are currently trialing a technology called vectoring, which is supposed to limit the effects of crosstalk.

Read about vectoring, looks like a promising technology!

In regards to distance, I'm about 350M away from the cabinet. It's a the top of my road. I used google earth and guessed around 320 - engineer used his whizmo and said 350 loop length. That's excluding the 20M of cable he cut too long and shoved under my house  >:(

Got to laugh though. At least if I ever move house, I'll have enough cable to reach it.....  :P

Including or excluding?  :-\

I'd be very tempted to have that "spare" 20 metres "out" and coiled up in my grotto, ready for some other future project . . .  ;)
