I know what the messages mean....but the BEEB! Really
« on: November 03, 2012, 01:53:30 PM »

From my router's event log
Quote
Nov 3 10:32:20   IDS scan parser : tcp port scan: 212.58.244.71 scanned at least 10 ports at 87.112.7.213. (1 of 1) : 212.58.244.71 87.112.7.213 0040 TCP 80->53540 [...R..] seq 4034195668 win 0

    Nov 2 16:03:47   IDS scan parser : tcp port scan: 212.58.246.90 scanned at least 10 ports at 87.112.7.213. (1 of 1) : 212.58.246.90 87.112.7.213 0040 TCP 80->64932 [...R..] seq 4012968844 win 0

Not worried, but the odd thing is that both 212.58.244.71 and 212.58.246.90 take one to BBC pages, apparently.

hmm interesting, at least you know your router firewall is doing what its supposed to.

Just to rule out any false positives, do you use any of the BBC media services, such as iplayer etc.

The other thing that strikes a chord as a possibility certain BBC investagative shows seem to like to run experiments to find out how many PCs are infected and run random port scans.  I think over the past few years theres been several programs such as watchdog etc that have taken such approaches in the name of investagative journalism.

Further to the above, a good example would be the research done by the BBC program 'Click' which deliberately sent controlled spam, took down a website and not just port-scanned UK PCs..  but actually cleaned up something like 20,000 computers which they found which were infected.

Above is a link for the full show, but if you just want to see the highlights

I do occasionally connect to IPlayer by HomePlug from the router to Foxsat+ PVR, but did not at times shown. OH does connect wirelessly for playing on her IPod.
