I thought the privatized National Grid plc owned the UK electricity distribution network.

No, National Grid plc own the UK transmission networks for electricity and gas.

You can consider the UK electricity distribution network to be the equivalent of BT Wholesale. The companies from which end users' buy their electricity are the equivalent of BT Retail -- using an analogy which should be meaningful.

Ahh. Thanks Burakkucat!  So the distinction between the UK's electricity distribution network and the UK's electricity transmission network is an arbitrary delineation point, which the City slickers conjured up for the purposes of flogging themselves the family silver?!

Is is to a certain extent the delination between equipment classified as high voltage and that at medium/low voltage so each seperate transmission/distribution company does not need to double up on the tools/equipment plus the appropiate staff/qualifications/safety etc to deal with the whole range of voltages.
