F3L900CP1.8MWHS Modem Cable: can it be true?
« on: February 22, 2012, 04:51:06 PM »

This is what several sites say. Is my scepticism unjustified? over 1.8m surely it would make Fanny Adams' difference.

The High-Speed Internet Modem Cable from Belkin lets you transmit data 10 times faster than a normal telephone cable. It transfers information at 100 Mbps and conveniently connects your modem or phone to your telephone wall jack. The 24 k gold-plated RJ11 contacts provide maximum conductivity to minimize data loss, and double-shielding reduces EMI/RFI (electromagnetic/radio frequency interference) so you can enjoy error-free data transfers at high speeds.

Hmm.  :hmm:  Seems to read like a lot of gobble-de-goop from an advertising copy-writer.

After another read, I'll say that appears to have been written for the (gullible) American market . . .

I agree with b*cat - absolute nonsense. It may well be a good cable which will have better performance than the bog-standard cable supplied with the modem/router, but the practical difference (if any) will be small.

Belkin has a track record for posting Deceptive Opinion Spam. [1] [2]

The Hi-Fi magazines are full of bogus adverts that are dressed up as impartial 'reviews'.

A magazine review of a very expensive TOSLink cable claimed that it produced an altogether sweeter sound... true tonal depth and ideal clarity..even and precise intonation...ease in blending...

oh dear!

cheers, a

I recall this convo from several years ago when Belkin first brought out this cable and was able to advertise it is such and charge such an exorbitant extra cost for it.
Yes there is a heck of a lot of hype in there and Im pretty sure that a debate was held on these forums too.

You may be able to find more info if you want to spend some time searching... but... iirc they were able to get away with it because CAT 3 UTP type cable was/had been used for telephone/voice/data/modems in some layouts.

Even I of little brain was sceptical, if not cynical, of such a massive multiplier; and from what one might think a reputable supplier. Another thing that irkingly amuses are the number of reviews that parrot what must be the manufacturers' publicity blurbs word for word. Have they ever even got near the box even?! :-\

ADSL Nation seems to recommend shielded cable, but looking at the tail of a XF-1e, to me it looks no thicker or rounder profiled than a standard telephone cable.

Its pretty much a shielded patch lead... wouldn't do any harm I guess apart from to your pocket!

Seems a pretty pointless exercise unless you can get the same performance gain all the way back to the exchange .
