I'm with Metronet and generally use their proxy server (for filtering, faster web pages etc). There have been occasions in the past when the server has gone on a 'go slow', indicated by slow web page loading and in particular with a speed test (should be quicker via proxy).
In the last couple of days I've reported a go-slow problem via the MN/PN forum.
However, it turns out that some web speed measuring pages are giving the wrong results.
Both the PlusNet one
http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ and the BBMax one
http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ give very low results when using the proxy. In fact the PN test page times out and wont open when the proxy is off. These 2 seem to use similar 'engines'.
NB. checked on Firefox & IE, same results.
Thinkbroadband
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html gives what appear to be correct results, checked by downloading a test file.
Any ideas about this anyone, is it the latest version of Java messing it up .....?
Terry.
