HG612 unlocked for sale?
« on: March 17, 2016, 07:34:55 AM »

Would anyone be able to sell me an unlocked Huawei HG612 ? (Or later equivalent if there is any?)

If so, would you be willing to configure it for me before shipping, at extra cost for your time?
[I want to use the devices in modem-only mode (bridge mode), locked down to ADSL2-only - no VDSL2, no ADSL2+.]

If an experiment with one modem goes well, and delivers high performance, then I will be wanting three more (a total of four units).

Ive got one that you could have but ive only got the one. it is unlocked and uses a one of the HW firmware (cant remember if its the update or the original one)

Its currently configured for modem mode though I cant remember if you can lock it down to ADSL2 only (though surely thats governed by the service configured on the pair?)

30 quid delivered if you want it.

The DLink modems that I'm using do offer options to limit the modulation schemes / protocols that are allowed to be used. For example, ADSL 1 only; ADSL 1 or ADSL2 or ADSL2+.

I think that the screenshots on Kitz' webpages relating to the HG612 do show such a UI ?

Just to confirm for you that the HG612 in bridge mode does give you the option to limit the modulation type to ADSL2, if that's what you want.

@roseway - indeed so. Thanks. Bridge mode (modem-only), and ADSL2 only, forbid ADSL2+. Thanks to Burakkucat for this idea.

Would you? Yes please, that would be very helpful indeed. ADSL2 only ticked, others unticked.

Just a caution to be careful as to what is turned off with regards to the firewall. If the firewall is completely disabled, then the HG612 itself becomes accessible (and thus open to reconfiguration) from anywhere on the Internet!  :o

@Burakkucat, this stuff doesn't apply does it? Because the box should now be in modem-only mode? - Just passing through PPP frames and doing nothing itself otherwise on the Internet?

Basically I assume there's a lot of UI which is now "n/a - don't care", as long as we're sure it's not being a router? Is that correct?

Is this similar to my DLinks, in that it can also be a router? Seeing as I see things such as UPnP mentioned. If it also has a WAN-facing IP address outside of the PPP pipe, where would that address value come from? Of course, inside the PPP pipe there's no need for firewalls or such because that's the router's job further downstream. Does it have a WAN-accessible IPv4 address for admin purposes?

Need de-confusing.

* Would anyone be willing to do a basic security review / sanity check on this device in bridge mode, after config?

Have been a bit under the weather recently, as all the drugs had made me really sick. So that's me scrounging for help again.

Does anyone know about the config export works in this device?

* When you export the config, is it in some sort of textual human-readable format, or in binary gibberish?

I just wonder, because if it's human-readable, then I could publish the config for security review by the sageful ones.

Otherwise it would be more difficult for me to ask anyone to inspect it for me, although I'd of course be happy to post the device and lay the costs. Or I suppose, someone could still take a gibberish format file and upload it into their own device in order to inspect it without physically posting anything around. Assuming they were feeling very kindly disposed towards me.

Question about the screenshots at
    http://wiki.kitz.co.uk/index.php/Huawei_HG612

* Is the config shown that of a device acting as an IP router?

I can't see anything in the UI shown in these pages that would set the device into bridge mode, probably because I've simply got lost and am too fuzzy to know what I'm doing.
