Billion 5200G R4 Lock 6db SNR
« on: August 25, 2011, 01:13:24 PM »

After moving house I had 5 sockets to choose from - went through them all, found the master, then had to rewire, remove extensions etc.

With all the messing I managed to get myself a 15db SNR target.

After lots of moaning to my ISP I got them to reset my line learning - which made no difference at all. Still 15db and rubbish sync rate.

Soooo I bought a billion 5200g r4 after reading it could force 6db snr.

Flashed fw 2.11.38.0(RE0.C29)3.9.4.144 on there and guess what - still 15db snr :(

I'm on 21cn - is this why? I have seen it drop to around 11db but then creeps back to 13 ish. Sync never changes. If I resync the line it goes back to 15db.

Is it the right firmware?

Hi Bez and welcome,

We really need to see your full modem stats to be able to address your queries.

Kind regards,

Actually I'm familiar with this router, as I used to use one myself. The 2.11.38.0 firmware disables the 6 dB noise margin lock. To get it back you need to revert to the earlier firmware, which I believe is 2.10.5.0.

I don't know if the fact you're on 21CN is relevant though, and as Walter says, your router stats may help to understand.

Hey guys, didn't think you'd need the stats - but here they are:-

Down Up
----------
SNR Margin:
12.8    5.5   db
Line Attenuation:
55.0    34.9   db
Data Rate:
3065    992   kbps

near-end interleaved channel bit rate: 3061 kbps
near-end fast channel bit rate: 0 kbps
far-end interleaved channel bit rate: 0 kbps
far-end fast channel bit rate: 972 kbps

ADSL Firmware Version
:FwVer:3.9.4.144_TC3085 HwVer:T14.F7_3.0

Line State
:Showtime

Modulation
:ADSL2 PLUS

Annex Mode
:ANNEX_A

So Interleaved on, fairly long line (tho I get 50db on a speedtouch 585v7).

Looking for that fw atm roseway and can only find a 5200A version, tried to flash that on but it says Unable to flash file.

I suspect that you're out of luck then. With ADSL2+ it seems that router tweaking doesn't work, so it's not too surprising that the 'lock' doesn't work either. :(

I think you need to go back to why your target noise margin is at 15 dB. Normally this would be the result of a significant amount of instability in the connection. If your connection was reset and it quickly reverted to 15 dB again, that cetainly implies that the connection is unstable. You need to make absolutely sure that your internal wiring is in good order, and if you have an NTE5 type of master socket you should connect the router to the test socket inside and see how stable the connection is then.

A good tool for diagnosis is Routerstats or Routerstats-lite. I don't know if the full program is compatible with the 5200G, but RS-Lite is, and would provide useful data about your connection stability.

Well that's the thing. I was dialled into my box at home when they "reset" the line. They told me it had reset twice and sync was 2800. I was sat there looking at the router and it hadn't reset all day and was still synced at 3200.

The SNR didn't change that day, nor since.

I've gone back to the other fw now, and forced it to be ADSL2. The attenuation has dropped but SNR is still pants.

I wonder if I can get my ISP to put me on adsl1  :)

The funny thing is my thomson syncs as G.DMT but this router won't let me set the line to that...

Sorted it :)

Forced the line to be g.lite and bam 6db :)

ADSL Firmware Version:
FwVer:3.9.4.144_TC3085 HwVer:T14.F7_3.0

Line State:
Showtime

Modulation:
G.DMT

Annex Mode:
ANNEX_A

Downstream   Upstream
SNR Margin:
6.0    6.0   db
Line Attenuation:
56.0    31.5   db
Data Rate:
4384    960   kbps

so hopefully my profile will update soon and i'll see an increase in speed :)

So it looks as though your connection is one of those which don't get on with ADSL2+. I hope it stays good now. :)
