I don't care if i lose Download speed i just want a smooth gaming connection. It's like every so often i lose connection for a split second, for example ill press shoot and nothing with happen or ill press jump and nothing will happen, ill jump over a wall and i will phiscally see it happen on my screen  and then ill just appear back behind the wall. Also on my netgear the "i" light will blink every 20 seconds or so, so all this means my broadband is intermittent right?

No. It just means that there is some activity on your link.

Hi Kezza,

If you look here you will see all the services available from Virgin Media

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/isp/virgin.html

BUT, in your case, as your service is provided via BT Wholesale, it depends upon what is available. In particular if you don't have 21CN available in the exchange there is very little that can be done.

In some cases there are other more expensive services usually designed for commercial users provided by other ISPs. A typical example is:-

http://www.spitfire.co.uk/ADSLAnnexM.shtml?gclid=CImR3s-E36oCFUkf4QodqlPv7Q

If you tell us which exchange you are connected to, there may also be other providers with their own "unbundled" exchange equipment.

Kind regards,
Walter

As a gamer, what you really need is a low-latency profile. Have you asked Virgin Media if they can provide you with such (a.k.a. a gaming profile)?

I didnt know there was such a thing... i will ask them on Monday. But i do know that i can have the great connection that im looking for down my line because i've experienced it. Like i tryed to explain in my 1st post on this thread, which i know makes no sense but is the absolute truth but no one seems to know whats going on there, it's a mystery, might have to call Moulder and Skully  :D

Please note that I am not definite that VM can provide a gaming profile but I have read the occasional mention of such an entity. :-\

Here's a little light reading for you !

http://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Gaming/bd-p/Gaming

And were you to migrate to the only separate LLU available - TalkTalk

http://talktalkmembers.net/forums/showthread.php?t=26625

there are plenty more threads as well if you google TT gaming profile

Kind regards,
Walter

Hey thnx for all your help guys appreciate it.

I don't think ill be changing ISP's, ill keep working with Virgin to get the connection i so long for  ;)

There was 1 thing i never mentioned which might play a factor, whenever i do a speedtest.net the download bit goes fine as normal but on the upload test it builds up to the 0.38mb which i get and then as it gets past the 1st half of the test it suddenly drops to 0.27mb and usually stays like that til the very end or at the last second jumps back up to 0.38mb.  ???

Perhaps you need to take such (Probably averaged) observations with some caution, remembering that data packets usually take milliseconds to reach a destination.

I suggest you should compare the final results with some from

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest.html

 and one from

www.speedtester.bt.com/

Kind regards,
Walter

Ok I finally figured out what was going on... every time my connection was tested by my ISP it raised my SNR (noise margin) by 3 db, from about 9.7 to 12.7 and it would stay this way for a day or two, resulting in me having a great gaming connection for that period of time.  ;)

Interesting. I wonder what is your ISP's default target SNRM?

Perhaps you could also discuss the possibility of them setting it to the default+3 dB for your line. As you realise, increasing the SNRM will decrease the sync speed, whereas decreasing the margin will increase the sync speed. Your attainable throughput speed is directly proportional to the sync speed.

As a gamer, you are really looking for a connection with low latency rather than the best throughput speed. Have you now asked your ISP about a gaming profile?

I asked about a gaming profile on the VirginM forum, some people got back to me saying, no there isnt, and the talktalk gaming profile is basically just adsl with interleaving disable which i already have.

About the SNR ive sent a message to another dude who works at virgin explaining basically what i said here and if there is a way to maintain the +3 db, waiting for a reply.

Im fine with losing sync speed, but id be alittle worried about my latency, would it increase much do you think?

It would be kind of ironic if the settings that ISP's use to deliver the fastest possible sync speeds are actually whats hampering gamers... Anway ill see how all this works out for me. hopefully it works and maybe it could be useful to alot of other gamers who actually have great broadband speeds but not the best gaming connection.

The latency of a connection is related more to the routing that the connection takes rather than the sync (or throughput) speed. With interleaving on the latency of a connection will be greater than with it off (i.e. fastpath). You can easily check the relative latency by observing the average ping time to your favourite game server.
