Telephone quality issue

(1/1)

Irvin:
Hi,

I'm trying to help a mate out with a phone issue. He had a drop-out on his line recently which BT kindly fixed. Every since his service was restored he has awful cracking on the line when a phone and his router are connected.

He's what he's tried...

Phone => Master = Okay
Phone => Filter =>Master = Okay
Phone + Router => Filter => Master = Okay UNTIL the router has negotiated a connection. Once connected the phone line quality drops

He has swapped-out all cables, the handset, the filter AND the router but no combination has had any improvement. He does have one extension but this has been physically disconnected from the Master.

It's got me stumped...

Cheers

Irvin

That's almost certainly a line fault. Severe crackling must presumably have an effect on the broadband performance, so it would bge a good idea to monitor the connection using Routerstats or Routerstats-Lite to see how the noise margin and the stability are affected. If, as seems likely, the noise margin bounces up and down a lot, and the connection periodically drops, then report it to the ISP as a broadband fault.

Irvin:
Thanks Roseway,

He's getting in touch with his provider to see what they have to say.
