RedCare & 21CN broadband
« on: August 08, 2011, 11:57:28 AM »

Gentlefolk,

Does anybody know if Redcare alarm systems are compatible with 21CN ADSL 1 broadband ?
If so has anybody found them to cause slower broadband performance ?
I assume they must use some form of dial-up logic?

Kind regards,
Walter

Dial-up? Yes, that is my understanding of how such systems work.

Perhaps RP or Ezzer could comment on any broadband performance hit from practical observations?

I believe there are different technologies available including GSM (mobile phone) for Redcare and other alarm monitoring systems.
The "traditional" monitored Redcare uses a constant signal on the line, conceptually similar to broadband but a different non-audible frequency.
To install alongside broadband the alarm installer will fit a suitable device, a sort of "filter", usually on the BT side of the master socket.
Your broadband filtering will be as normal.  ;)

See: http://www.redcare.bt.com/Resources/Broadband_Compatibility.html

Quite how, or if, that works with FTTC I've no idea, but "normal" broadband is catered for, ADSL1 or ADSL2+.

Yes Walter, they are compatible. Pretty much as HP has said, plus the 'Frames Jumper Man' should also fit a filter on the frame (MDF).
