Oooooo   But Unc you're my Guru   :D      ......  Do I need this Java thing at all  .....?   because the version I have installed is shown as this

Entry Name          : Java(TM) 6 Update 26
Version             : 6.0.260
Company             : Oracle
Installation Folder : C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\

on my Add Ons/Extensions in Firefox  it is showing  as     Java Console 6.0.26    DISABLED    Not compatible with Firefox 6    ...............   but I can't see anything different  happening without it !  :'(    so, that's why I wonder do I need it  ?   :'( :'(

I have another Java thingy  ... called Quickstarter   which is enabled in Firefox 6  ......     my mind has closed down again  ;D

The Guru is off sick with a headache  :D

Well it seems that others who have downloaded FireFox 6 are reporting that version 1.6.26 is incompatible.

But that is the Java console in Firefox Add ons

If you look in plug ins you will see that it is ok and apparently the plug-in is the main thing

Test whether Java is working here

And to confuse things more, version 1.6.27 has just been released........... :shrug2:

According to the release notes anyone who has update 26,doesn't need update 27

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/6u27-relnotes-444147.html

Java SE 6u27 does not add any fixes for security vulnerabilities beyond those in Java SE 6u26. Users who have Java SE 6u26 have the latest security fixes and do not need to upgrade to this release to be current on security fixes.

Unc, one thing I notice  is that Java Console  (the one that is not compatible with FF6) is an    Oracle product, whilst the Java Test, which tells me my Java is working is a Sun Micro systems programme  .....    as I haven't a clue what I'm talking about   ::)   does this have any bearing on anything ?

The product was until recently owned and authored by Sun Micro System, who sold it to Oracle........so it is possible that you have references to both companies. In itself, nothing to worry about.

According to this Java console is not required to make Java work in Firefox

http://techlogon.com/2011/08/17/java-console-is-incompatible-with-firefox-6/

Quote
Is There A New Version Of The Java Console Add-on?

No. Checking Firefox add-ons for updates will not find any newer version of Java Console that is compatible with Firefox 6.0

Does It Matter?

No – you can safely ignore these incompatible Java Console add-ons. The Java Console is a redundant add-on i.e. it is not needed for Java to work properly in Firefox!

There is no performance loss in having these add-ons as disabled.
