How NOT to do it with a Thompson TG784
« on: July 05, 2011, 10:50:04 AM »

Gentlefolk,

Experience is, as usual, a hard taskmaster ! I hope this note might stop others having the same difficulty.

I had to install a Western Digital Elements 2 Tb external hard drive on a Mac system.
It worked as expected until the Mac restarted at 03:00 for an automatic back up session whereupon the modem lost sync with the (unused) VOIP light red.
I.e. the computer and peripherals still had power applied but had been shut down beforehand although the modem is left on at all times.
The ADSL service could be re-synced by power-cycling the modem.

I had installed the new drive with its switch mode power supply in the adjacent wall socket to the TG784 modem's similar power supply.
The problem was avoided by using a double socket extension lead with the computer and disk drive both plugged in a little further away from the wall-mounted modem and wall sockets.

Kind regards,
Walter
