http://www.virusbtn.com/vb100/RAP/RAP-quadrant-Dec10-Jun11-850.jpg  the Avast tested here is the free version, it is right up there with all the paid security suites.

The latest version gets features previously only available in the pro system and you now get the "Avast Auto Sandbox" feature that catches suspicious apps and runs them sandboxed while you check them.

The CNet editors seem impressed enough.

I use Avast simply because it is so "tweakable"  , many free AV's are limited in the user configuration area .

I found the "Sandie Box" most annoying and most of the tie did not remember my instructions to allow, needless to say it has been turned off as I can't be doing with having to constantly give permissions to what I know are safe programs each time I want to either install or activate.

Other than that, as per usual, a very nice AV.

I wondered about that but have to say that after a few weeks of running with auto sand box on I have seen nothing annoying, I guess I have not run into anything dubious yet.

If I remember correctly the biggest problem was with downloading a file from the internet, or installing from the internet, when I went to find it it did not exist as it had been automatically put in the Sandie Box then automatically removed, which I assure you was a BIG pain in the neck when trying to download drivers etc for a PC.
