Wiring NTE5 to Telephone Extension Socket
« on: July 04, 2011, 07:07:47 AM »

On this page - http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/socket.htm - and under the heading - "NTE5 Faceplate - Ethernet CAT5e Extension variation" - the image shows the NTE5 connections to A & B with Cat5e cable.

What are the connections at the other end of the cable if using a BT telephone extension socket exclusively for the ADSL?

A goes to 5 on the extension socket
B goes to 2

Hi JenniferTh and welcome,

I'm not entirely sure what you attempting to do but if your master socket is as illustrated, you will need to connect the wires into a standard phone socket on pins 2 and 5.
Make sure that no other wires are connected.

However if at all possible, it's usually much better to connect the modem directly to the master socket ideally with BT's dual SSFP or the equivalent one from e.g. ADSL Nation:-

Kind regards,
Walter

EDIT, Sorry Eric, I didn't see your were saying the same thing.

I am trying to do exactly what the quoted article deals with. Running an ADSL extension to my computer room 8 metres upstairs.
My present telephone line cable is giving noise problems.
I already have the master front plate with the A&B connections as in the photo.

Thanks that's swift! Waiting for the cable to arrive then will wire as you both say.

Thank You.

That's exactly the same arrangement as I have, and it works very well. If you want, you can still use the extension for a telephone, so long as you use an ADSL filter with it, but the best arrangement is to keep it as a dedicated ADSL extension.

Yes - I thought I could still use the phone with a filter in the xtension. I will not be doing that however - cordless phones with 4 handsets should cover all phone needs.

Thanks again.

Hi again JeniferTh,

It's a good idea to try to segregate all DECT phone base stations as far as possible from your broadband wiring.

Kind regards,
Walter

How do you mean? I have one base station plugged into the master telephone socket. The other phones are on chargers elsewhere in the house.

The router wiring will only be close at the master socket then gets further away soon after. Base station is 3ft from the master socket.

I think Walter meant that it's best to keep all the phone chargers, including the base station, well away from the telephone cabling and also well away from the router. Obviously the base station has to be plugged into a phone socket somewhere, and it's unlikely that your arrangement will be problematic.

Spot on Eric !

I suggested that you should try to keep any transmitting base stations as far away as possible from any ADSL cables etc.
Likewise keep the base station power supply cable away from ADSL signals.

You can see here a typical discussion on transmitted power (which seem higher than we are used to for WiFi devices).

http://www.quantumr.hu/plantronics/DECT_Safety.pdf

However I'm no expert on DECT phones and there is no doubt vast amounts of data available on the web. Some will be emphasising the health issues whilst others are probably attempting to define the physics of the devices.

Kind regards,
Walter

The cable arrived and I carried out the installation on Wednesday. All is well with a steady connection - maybe even minor speed improvements.

Again - thanks for your help.
