Ping on Pingtest Net and Speedtest Net... I'm puzzled
« on: May 15, 2011, 04:46:49 PM »

The Ping to the best server as chosen by  Pingtest Net is 36, but when I use Speedtest net it is shown as 80. The two test were conducted back to back as far as is possible, and followed by a further ping test. This was 36, just as the first time.

It is difficult to understand why the result from on of the testers should be more than twice the other.
Am I misunderstanding something (probably ;D). So it's education time for renluop again. Please!

I don't think you should read too much into the ping values from speedtest.net. I just tried it and it gave a value of 93 ms, whereas if I ping bbc.co.uk directly I get 37 ms. If it's important to you, ping the site you're interested in to get a meaningful result.

Interesting ;D, Roseway.

I was just idly tinkering, but  raises the question; if Pingtest is unreliable, how much trust can be placed in its fellow Speedtest? :-\

Try those pings on different browsers and you see different values, try again in Safe Mode with networking and they change yet again.

Ping via Command Prompt to the site you need to check as Eric says, it's the only way to test.

My pings from Prompt to Kitz are @ 24ms  the best ping to the nearest server with Speedtest.net is 57ms.

Hi

One thing to remember is that some sites prioritise responses ,so pings may not be responded to immediately in extreme circumstances they may not even respond or time out .

For normal general info /trouble shooting of say the isp performance ,is to have some history of some reliable site say bbc.co.uk or in case of gaming some history of the actual site .

Personally I prefer to use tracert this gives better information. But again I have some history of half a dozen sites .

Regards Jeff

Hi, it seems to be abnormal..i don't know why the value changes for two ping test sites..I usually check my PING at Whoisxy.com . i got correct values till now..so you check in this site, so that we could find which is correct...

Ping bbc.co.uk with that test I get 124ms  :'(

Tracert or ping command the same URL gives 24ms , ping test sites are useless.

A command line five "Ping!" of bbc.co.uk produces --

Quote
--- bbc.co.uk ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 received, 0% packet loss, time 4026ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 17.543/18.819/20.889/1.203 ms

Using the suggested site, I see --

Quote
Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.241.131] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=124ms TTL=242
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=124ms TTL=242
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=124ms TTL=242
Reply from 212.58.241.131: bytes=32 time=124ms TTL=242
Ping statistics for 212.58.241.131:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 124ms, Maximum = 124ms, Average = 124ms

Oops! Not very good, to say the least.
