Replacement for a DG834G V3???
« on: April 11, 2011, 07:06:08 PM »

Can anybody recommend a good alternative to the 'good old' Netgear DG834g?

I have had my V3 for many many years now and since I seem to have an issue with lots of noise from the evening to the next morning I am looking at trying another router.

Is it worth sticking with Netgear? if so, what is the current alternative to the DG834?
If not, Netgear who else?

I have seen peoples comments on the Thomson 585 V5 (which i believe is no longer available) and also the 2wire 2700.

Any recommendations?

The old Netgear DG834Gv3 was a rather exceptional router, in the way that it held onto the connection on noisy lines. You may be disappointed with a replacement. Possibly the best router for difficult lines is the 2-Wire 2700HGV which is supplied as the BT Business Hub, and which you can get on EBay for not very much money. If you get one of these, it has to be unlocked to enable you to use it on other ISPs. The procedure is described here.

Many thanks for the response.

I will look into the possible use of the 2 wire router.

 :)

I moved from a DG834G v3 to a 2700HGV and was VERY pleased with the result.

The line is some 6.2Km long with an attenuation around 74.9db but still the 2700HGV manages to sync at 896Kbps . The router looses sync around once a week - always between 4.30 and 5.30 and it resyncs immediately at about 676Kbps.  I simply force another resync the following morning and we're back to 896Kbps. fabulous router!

For comparison the DG834G v3 gave me 648kbps and frequently lost sync in the evening and many, many times during the night. I have also tried the DG834G v4, V5, D-Link DSL 2640b and Thompson 585 v5 but none of these modems can  sync with the Alcatel kit at the exchange.

I've just bought a second 2700HGV on ebay for £11 and await its arrival. I'm hoping its got the v5 firmware installed but if not I'll replace the v6 firmware with the Qwest firmware (as mention in an earlier thread).

Good luck.

Which raises the obvious question for TableLeg, what ISP are you with and do you know what the exchange equipment is?

(e.g. I'm with Bethere and a DG834Gv4 or GT would be much better than a V3 with their equipment)

Not so sure about the 2700 on lines, like mine, which aren't maximum length. I changed from ST546 to 2700. It did get slightly faster sync/throughput but at the expense of stability. Very often in the evenings the CRC rate rocketed and throughput plummeted. After some 10s of minutes of this the 2700 then usually decided to resync. Then it developed a hardware fault and I'm back to the ST546, and am not inclined to buy another 2700.

Cheers,
Peter

In answer to this question, I am with gofast and my connection is through BT equipment as far as I know.

My exchange is approx. 1km from my home according to the exchange information.

Hi
If you are only 1 Km from the exchange then you should not be worried about attenuation so you have a good choice of routers to select from ,almost any of the Netgear (except perhaps the dg834g v5 )

I have used both the DG834g v4 and the dg834gt both giving very good service .

quote  since I seem to have an issue with lots of noise from the evening to the next morning
quote My exchange is approx. 1km from my home according to the exchange information.

Maybe you should try to sort this out the noise issue first .
Can you post your stats .?

Jeff,

What stats would you like?

The attached is a routerstats graph of a typical evening.

Hi

Have you tried to improve your connection .

the stats from here to see your line condition (synch rtae ,attenuation, errors  etc.. Looking at the graph ,looks terrible . Maybe its your router but might be something else ,,possiby your internal wiring .

have you tried a quiet line test whilst connected to the test socket?

Dial 17070 and select option 2.

1KM from the exchange, BTW's equipment, possible 21CN connection capable for ADSL 2+, if you don't need wireless, nice and cheap DGN1000, if you need wireless, DGN3500.

However also trying the steps to remove the noise on the line can certainly help.

I have and all is quiet.

I also use an Adsl nation filtered faceplate on the master socket and this has improved things a lot and the router is plugged directly into the master socket.

So does this mean your SNR margin is stable ?

No, it just doesn't fluctuate so much.

Tonights noise plot.

Have you investigated a possible REIN issue, such as heating, street lights.
