Variation in synch speeds
« on: September 22, 2007, 12:19:28 PM »

My MT882AX DSL router synchs at 4.7MBPS.  After a few hours, the rate rises to 5MBPS.  20 hours later, it has fallen to 3.7MBPS.

I have a reliable working MaxADSL connection.  I routinely shutdown and restart each morning and the synch speed recovers after the usual fall off overnight.  For example, the stated synch speed is 3.7MBPS.  I restart the router and the synch speed immediately becomes 4.5MBPS.

I'm just a bit puzzled.  My synch speeds used to remain stable 18 months ago when I first received MaxADSL service.  My telephone exchange is said not to be at maximum contention.

Is what I am observing typical please?

It's not unknown for some routers to change their connection speed downwards without appearing to drop the connection and re-sync. It happened to me sometimes when I was using a DG834GT. But it wouldn't normally be expected to rise by itself - that capability doesn't officially exist in ADSL Max, but is a feature of ADSL2+ which isn't yet available except on some LLU-enabled exchanges.

I'm afraid I can't really explain what you're seeing. I don't think it's typical. Of course, if you just left your router on all the time then it would probably stabilise at ~3.7 Mbps.

Thanks for the reply.  The MT882AX DSL router is ADSL2+ capable, I believe.

Are you sure it isnt losing synch for some reason, then reconnecting at a higher or lower rate depending on line conditions? Maybe borrow a different router and see what happens.

What chris suggests is the most obvious suggestion...

However, the  Huawei MT882 is normally supplied by TalkTalk which use LLU -
I'm really not sure and this is possible - but I wonder if.......

Theres a Huawei MSAN in your local exchange (entirely possible) which are adsl 2+ ready but can easily be capped at 8Mb, if youre on LLU then this could be a possibility.

hmmm  on 2nd thoughts I just noticed youre with PN not TT so unless you are on LLU then this is unlikely... but then again just pondering and I'm probably rambling, cause I really dont imagine BT configuring a MSAN for adsl 2+ and I think I got distracted by Huawei.  BT use several different makes of MSANs/DSLAMs

SRA (seamless rate adaption) isn't offered by any UK ISP - ADSL2+ or otherwise. I am under the impression that Be did once trial it and decided it was a support nightmare. I tend to agree with them.
