Edimax Router/Modem AR-7084 Command Line Inter4face
« on: September 16, 2007, 08:14:07 PM »

Hi Everybody

Has anybody had experince of the Edimax Router/Modem? What I'd like to know is where I can find a reference guide to the command line interface so I can enquire/change settings via Telnet or such like? I'm exploring this via Edimax themselves and if they come up trumps I'll post the result, but I'm not holding my breath!!! ;)

Hi mattc2

Welcome to the forum.

I have no experience of this modem/router, but IIRC there was a thread about this make some months ago. It may be worth having a trawl back through the threads. Otherwise I'm sure somebody will be along who can help.

Edit: I've just done a search and found nothing. Must be my memory playing tricks. :-[

Not got any eperience of it Im afraid.

A CLI manual depends on the manufacturer going to the trouble of actually compiling one, and it doesnt seem like edimax have made one available (at least for public release).

Different routers have different chipsets... BUT - there are several different routers that may use the same chipset and sometimes you can fall lucky that a manufacturer of another router router using a similar chipset has issued a CLI manual.

To do this you will need to do a bit of digging around via telnet into the router itself.

This is exactly what I did a few years ago when I first got a voyager 2100.  Telnetting into the shell gave me info about the cpu - which showed me that it was a Broadcom router.. and I then went in search of routers which used the same chipset and fell lucky that USRobotics had issued a good guide.
Same applies with the Voyager 205 and Solwise had issued an excellent CLI guide... same again with the TalkTalk Modem.

If you want to explore the CLI then you have to telnet into the router and see what you can find out out... it helps if you know linux (which I dont and relied upon google).  However theres a starter on how I did this on the voyager 2100 CLI page.. towards the bottom under shell commands.

Theres no guarantee what you will find and I strongly recommend you proceed with caution..

btw - a quick search tells me that under the hood your router is probably a Trendchip TC3162

Most router CLI's will support either a help command or will display a list of commands if you enter a question mark.

Of course this is the painful way of doing it.

Thanks evrybody for your input. (been away so not had chance to catch up 'till now). Well as suspected Edimax came up with the fat zero. FYI I can telnet to it OK and, Kitz, your right it is a TrendChip. Odd interface though. I do know a bit about Linux and it's not like what I know e.g. a 'ls' commad does not list the directory but a list of commands and they have a sort of conctinated operation, see below

Copyright (c) 2001 - 2006 TrendChip Technologies Corp.
tc> ls
Valid commands are:

Usage: noisemargin_value

I can get it to do stuff therefore but it such a pain and a suck and see job. Anyway as per peoples advice I'll go in search of other TrendChip Modem/Routers and see what I can find. Of course any help is always most welcome.

P.S

In return: every wanted a good network moinitoring tool to keep tabs on your bandwidth usage etc? Try this http://www.paessler.com/prtg it's free for up to five sensors so great for home/small business use.

Hi matt

Glad you managed to at least get somewhere .  Ive poked around my router a few times looking to see whats available and sometimes its a matter of try things and see.

as mentioned above though my linux knowledge is practically zilch so Im not much use when it comes to that sort of thing.

Hope you do manage to get somewhere with this... good luck
and thanks for the prtg linky :)

I know it's quite late but I think it will be helpfull for someone seeking for a CLI manual to hack his Edimax AR-7084...  ;D

I think I've found a "manual" about the edimax AR7084's CLI.
In reality a Zyxel's router, but I tried hiden commands and it works as described... :-)

Thanks for that information. You may be interested in this thread which discusses the same CLI.
