Netgear & 2Wire comparison
« on: February 09, 2011, 06:09:19 PM »

Gentlefolk,

I though some of you might be interested in a comparison I've just done on (another) lousy long line between an old Netgear DG834GT running V1.02.16 - DGteam Rev 0848 firmware and a 2Wire running the old V4.25.27 firmware.

The Netgear produced a BT Speed test result of 128 Kbps at an IP Profile of 250 with both upstream and downstream sync speeds of 288 Kbps.

Kind regards,
Walter

Hmm, there's something suspicious about that. What order did you do them in?
The Netgear looks very much as though it's on a fixed 256kbps connection.

HI HP,

The Netgear first. Upon the very first sync connection the BT speedtest was only 30 Kbps.
However if I can get the 2Wire fully working I shall stay with that.
(Note also that this is still within the training period.)

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi Walter

Not sure what 'product' you are on there mate, (it looks like a fixed-rate to me), but even with a 63.5dB atten, you could be getting more speed than that currently seen, via a change to one of the other products. You probably know this, but thought I'd mention it just in case mate.

within the training period
In which case it means nothing.
I'd just leave well alone, keep one router connected and leave it on until well after the training period is over.

@ HP,

I would normally agree but I'm uncomfortable leaving such an old modem with terrible performance.
I did a BT Speedtest this morning yielding 25 kbps on a 250 IP Profile.

I installed a Thompson 585 V7 but that won't authenticate properly, and seems to be following the 2700HV pattern where two very short green flashes can be seen on the authentication LED.
Here's the relevant (edited IP address) log:-

00:05:50 (since last boot)
GRP Default destination is not routed anymore via gateway A.B.C.D

00:05:50 (since last boot)
PPP link down (Internet) [A.B.C.D]

00:05:48 (since last boot)
GRP Default destination is routed via gateway A.B.C.D

00:05:48 (since last boot)
PPP link up (Internet) [A.B.C.D]

00:05:48 (since last boot)
PPP CHAP Chap receive success : authentication ok

00:05:47 (since last boot)
PPP CHAP Receive challenge (rhost = ERX3.Reading2)

00:05:42 (since last boot)
xDSL linestate up (ITU-T G.992.1; downstream: 736 kbit/s, upstream: 288 kbit/s; output Power Down: 14.5 dBm, Up: 11.5 dBm; line Attenuation Down: 63.5 dB, Up: 31.5 dB; snr Margin Down: 6.5 dB, Up: 6.0 dB)

00:05:24 (since last boot)
DHCS server up

Kind regards,
Walter

Which one are you referring to, either of those are perfectly good models?
If you suspect one has a fault, just use the other. I didn't suggest which one....

FYI my current router, running at over 19mbps on ADSL2+ is DG834GT/DGTeam0848....  :P

@ HP,

What a lucky chap you are !!!!!!!!!

I'm just a bit suspicious of the Netgear so I'm leaving the 585V7 on, although it won't authenticate at present and we've raised a BT fault.

Kind regards,
Walter

Nothing wrong with the Netgear but I would not use the 1018 firmware as I had issues with it.

Gentlefolk,

Just to update you all, the authentication problem was found by AAISP to be an improper response to IPv6 authentication.
They've disabled IPv6 in their Radius server and hidden the problem.

Apart from a malfunctioning Netgear DG834 running dodgy DG Team firmware which gave a throughput at an astronomic 25 Kbps speed, the 2700 HGV and Thompson 585 V7 and TG784 modems ALL failed in an identical fashion.

It behoves us all to make careful checks on our equipment for IPv6 compatibility.

Here's the resultant poor diagnostics picture and quite disappointing upstream speed.

Kind regards,
Walter
