Removed application still in control panel
« on: February 02, 2011, 02:30:46 PM »

I removed Avira antivirus from my system, but it is still listed in control panel. I can see no way to remove the entry. Ideas please! :)

How did you remove Avira............did you use the official removal tool.?  If not, there may be some left over registy entries lying about and causing Avira to appear in the CP

Download and run http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AVIRA-Removal-Tool-for-Windows.shtml ......version 3.0.1.17 works on Win7.........and run tool ( no need to install) then reboot.

Hi
@TD have I misread what the tool is ?

Avira AntiVir Removal Tool detects and eliminates Worm/Sober.J, Worm/Sober.P, Worm/Sober.Y and Worm/Stanit.A worms

not sure it will do the required job

Go into Windows/System32 folder
have the folder view so you can see Details, click on the Type column heading so it groups files by type, scroll down to the Control Panel Items, .cpl files, delete the Avconfig one

:-[ I forgot to come back on this one.

I trod the hard way to its complete removal, seeking out every Avira/Antivir registry entry and deleting them.

I would still run the removal tool as linked to by jeffbb..............there may well be entries lying around that are not obviously connected ( some may not have avira/antivir in their names/descriptions) and which could therefor be missed in a manual scan.

Did that take a long time?

I use a program called "Registry Crawler" and it is really good, but I just tried to access and find the owners site but it seems to no longer be available.

Description

Registry Crawler enables power users and developers to quickly find and configure Registry settings. A powerful search engine allows you to find Registry information based on search criteria. Results are displayed in a list allowing you to access any key found with a single click. Registry Crawler has built-in support for bookmarks: you can bookmark any key in the Registry and then access it directly from the system tray. This feature allows you to create a set of Registry keys that you frequently access, eliminating the need to manually open regedit. Registry Crawler is resizable, allowing you to easily view long keys. The user interface has been redesigned, and an Export-to-Text button was added.

I do have a trial version saved.

Sorry, when I used the expression "manual scan" I ws referring to you manually going through the registry entries.
