C/A Forums Spam Attack
« on: January 13, 2011, 01:52:17 PM »

At present the C/A forums are under a massive spam attack.

Apparently its something to do with the  Recaptcha software that is used to block spammers that has be cracked.

A better explanation here by the C/A admin (post #4)

The situation you refer to is affecting all forums, including this one.

Admin. are beavering away in the long hours of the night (and day) to rectify the situation.

There is nothing for members to be worried about.  :)

Orangeproblems had an intense spam attack which started on 01/01/11. Their Admin is now vetting all new joiners before allowing a first post to be made.

We're having to intervene quite a lot too. Hopefully we're not delaying genuine members from joining, but we're rejecting a lot of identifiable spammers.

Have to echo the sentiments about this forum admin too...excellent work you all do to keep us safe on here.

May I just ask a question about the spam attacks....?  On a very small forum I belong to where membership is restricted to about 20 people....I notice recently, as registered users there's two bots...one is a google bot but can't remember the other one.  Are these spammers too?  I notice that sometimes there are messages that move down the pages sometimes in there (yet no one has done it...) and it's been crashing a lot lately....is it to do with these bots and are they dangerous?  Just curious as there's never been more than the usual registered peeps in there until this year.

Yes, a great number of these spammers are not real people, but automatically generated spam-bots.

The ususal thing is to send out one piece of malware in the expectation that it will infect thousands of inadequately protected computers....and then these infected machines can be grouped into a bot-net and used to transmit spam to all and sundry.
So as well as the forums/sites trying to protect themselves from these attacks, we can all help to keep the internet clean by making sure that our own PCs are clean, malware free and thus not being part of a bot-net.

These can be dangerous in that they can keep replicating themselves and thus sent out an ever increasing volume of junk.....and a lot of that junk can be dangerous if you happen to click on any links contained within them...sure fire way of arriving at a very bad site.

On the question of the specific site you refer to, yes that site may have been compromised and may require a good clean.

Not all bots are spambots of course. All the big search engines (like Google) use bots for collecting data for their search databases, so you don't need to be concerned about those.

('Bot' is just short for robot - in other words it's an automated system. Spammers are very fond of using them to gain entry to forums, but they are used for many other purposes as well.)
