ADSL Bonding / Aggregation
« on: January 06, 2011, 02:17:59 PM »

Hi Folks,

So I am trying to find some good info/guides on DIY adsl bonding most of what I have found on google is rather old or based on pppoe or canadian isp's

I am thinking along the lines of a linux or bsd based solution with either a few adsl pci cards or connecting 2 routers to 2 ethernet cards and configuring MLPPP.

I understand that that needs to be ISP supported. I know there are a few ISP's offering bonding now and I have read up on sharedband but would realy enjoy trying to do this myself (yes im a nerd).

So few questions I have:

1) Does anyone know which ISP's would support this or even what the right question is I need to ask them
2) Am I correct in thinking its MLPPP I need to use
3) Does anyone know of any linux based router distro's or even custom router firmware that supports this allready?
4) Does anyone know of any UK based guides that allready exsist?

I plan to blog and share the whole project for the wider community and would be great to get some input from anyone that has experience.

(sorry I hope this is a good place to post this I could not decide where to put it)

Never having done it, my knowledge on line bonding isn't very good Im afraid.

Be is an obvious choice for the ISP based home type consumer solution.
There are specialist firms aimed at the more business like line bonding but this can work out expensive... and also the sharedband providers.

If you want to try MLPPP.... then an Entanet reseller such as UKFSN springs to mind.  Their owner (Jason) is probably a good contact point on this subject.
Im sure one of their users did a guide on MLPPP linebonding a few years ago, I'll see if I can find the link in a bit.

Depending on what you want to do, Load Balancing may be another area to look at.

Im not sure if you are the same person that emailed me this morning, so Im including that reply  in here too so that if anyone has more knowledge on this subject then they will be able to contribute too.

Hi

Thanks for your comments.

Never having done linebonding myself, Im afraid my knowledge in this area is very patchy, so please dont take any of this as gospel and Im probably not the best person to ask.
If you are looking at the 'DIY version' then you need an ISP that supports MLPPP such as Entanet or AAISP

>> each ISP to have their own DSLAM

I understand where you are coming from when you say the need for separate DSLAMs for resiliancy... but AFAIK to bond the lines (unless using a specialist company like sharedband and/or specialist routers) then you need to use the same ISP to combine the lines into one single IP connection, to get the speed benefits from both lines.

However, FYI......

Be have their own (LLU) MSANs only shared with O2.
ISPs such as Enta/AAISP use BTws network, so there is a good chance you'd end up on the same DSLAM/MSAN at the exchange. The smaller your exchange then the greater chance that both lines would end up on the same MSAN and theres not much you can do about that and no way for it to be pre-determined.

Depending on what you want to do, and if redundancy is the most important factor.. perhaps another option would be load balancing 2 lines from different ISPs.  It would also increase your speed for multithreaded type downloads.

I'm not sure if you are the same person who asked a similar question today in this thread http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,8559.0.html
but Im also pasting this reply in there, so that if others with more knowledge or information on the subject may be be able to contribute.

Regards

Hey guys,

I've been researching broadband bonding recently and I found a few places that can do this without software (i.e. MLPPP) or the support of an ISP.  I have also seen a demo of this at a tradeshow.  My understanding is that the bonding technology is implemented in layer 4, therefore there is no ISP involvement.  I'm sure if you google search for "broadband bonding" you'll find what you're looking for.

Hope this helped!
