Maxed
« on: August 23, 2007, 03:34:15 PM »

I have just been maxed and these are my router readings, and I would welcome any advice
I am several miles probably four miles from my exchange

System Up Time 01:15:16
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 19235 30938 0 418 8933 01:14:40
LAN 10M/100M 31600 19904 0 9027 534 01:15:12
WLAN 11M/54M 76 0 0 2 0 01:15:03

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1312 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 6 db 10 db

Could I expect to do better than the 940 speed I am getting I was Previously on a 512 fixed connection, or am I lucky to be connected ??
LINE STATS PRIOR TO MAX  MARCH 24  2007
This is a copy of my mail to the group on March 24 this year with my stats as they were

I am with plusnet and my speed is 490or so with a 512 connection. I am several miles from the exchange and had an unreliable line until I connected with a DG 834G  modem router after contacting the Kitz forum. Since then my line has been reliable and Stays connected . I am told I may get a faster connection if maxed but there is no certainty of this my line stats are
System Up Time 09:26:47
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 5945 6816 0 32 267 06:27:27
LAN 10M/100M 280 0 0 1 0 09:26:43
WLAN 11M/54M 19578 17124 0 541 65 09:26:34

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 576 kbps 288 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 12 db 18 db

Could anyone advise me if I should stay as I am or take the max option, with the chance of doubling my speed  Thank You   ED  Well I have done this but ---

Do you think I could somehow do even better

With 63dB attenuation, you are doing pretty well to get what you're getting.

This is one of the things that annoys me about the BT BRAS profiles. If these didn't restrict the flow of traffic then it could possibly squeeze another couple of hundred kbps out of your throughput rate. But unless you move to a LLU provider, this isn't going to happen.

Have you done everything on the Low SNR page... including removing your ring wire from the master and extension sockets, and also using a filtered faceplate if that is appropriate for your circumstances? Even a 1-2dB increase in SNR may push you up enough to get you the 1250kbps profile if you feel it's worth it (you need to sync at 1440kbps or higher for that).

WORD OF WARNING!!

Do not cause the line to resync too often when you are messing about. Or else BT's wonderful DLM will raise your target SNR margin, up to 9, 12 or even at worst case 15, which would give you a slower speed than a fixed 512 connection on your line :(

By too often, I mean make sure you don't go over a couple of times within an hour, just to be safe. I don't know the exact threshold for triggering these DLM changes (I wish I did), but I do know that my target SNR margin is now 15dB, having started off at 6dB.

And you can't use the DMT tool for reducing your SNR margin on the Netgear DG834G (you can on the GT).

So try and improve it, but be careful you don't resync too many times.

It looks like your IP profile will be limiting your speeds right now - but things do seem about correct for your line stats.

If you stayed on traditional adsl then you would either be on 512k or 1Mb.. which would give you the same as youre seeing now.

To get to the next speed level of 1250 kbps then your router would have to consistantly sync in the  1440 kbps to 1696 kbps range. Your best chance of doing that is by following all the tips on my low SNR page including removal of the ring-wire.

Hello These are my stats now

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 10552 11760 0 232 980 03:29:14
LAN 10M/100M 203240 162664 0 795 117 76:37:41
WLAN 11M/54M 1641 0 0 7 0 03:28:42

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1280 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 6 db 11 db

B.T.Test yesterday

Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - *1000 kbps*
    DSL connection rate: *448 kbps*(UP-STREAM)  * 1280 kbps*(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - *930 kbps*

For some time I had connection speed of 1600 and then a power cut broke the connection and my  speed was down to135 I am now afraid to disconnect, in case my profile or whatever is downgraded. The 900 or so is twice my previous  fixed  speed . I would like to do better but maybe I cant. Thanks for help Regards  E

I'm afraid it's always going to be a bit on the edge with that level of attenuation. The best thing you can do (if you haven't already) is read Kitz' low SNR page which she mentioned above and make sure that your own wiring is as optimal as you can make it.
