What would cause this?
« on: October 16, 2010, 08:05:38 AM »

Hi everybody. Every few days my download speed drops from a very slow but unfortunately normal 500k down to about 300k.
It lasts for about 3 to 4 days then goes back up again.
Router is plugged directly into master socket and there's no other bt wiring in the house.
Router is a Belkin 8635, then tried another router, a Belkin 8636, both same results.
Got 3 PC's around the home all reporting same results on the speed test so i'm pretty sure it's nothing my end.
I am on the end of a very long line so i dont expect a super fast connection but i dont think this is right.
Routers always shows sync speed the same whether download speed is slow or not.

I have attatched line stats and typical speed results which might help.
I know 200k might not sound much to some of you speed freaks but every little helps when your connection is as slow as mine!!

Any thoughts??  Thankyou Wayne

Hi Wayne and welcome,

If you are on a BT service, could this not be the result of your IP profile changing?

EDIT, Sorry - a senior moment - I was reading the speed as throughput rather than sync speed. However the 2Wire is very good on performance on long lines.

It would appear that you might have an alternating long-term constant noise difference though.

I'd suggest trying a 2Wire 2700HGV modem to see how that performs on your long line.

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi Walter and thankyou. I have heard the 2700 is good on a long line, have got one coming from Ebay. Will try that, although i my Belkins are both N speed on the wireless which i prefer but i'll certainly use the 2700 to help investigate this problem.

Regarding the noise issue, i have attatched a routstat pic of tx noise (rx noise is always zero).

My isp (Fast.co.uk) have given a rather scripted response "You are on the end of a very long line, maybe there's a connection which fills with water somewhere, we can get BT out but if they find things are within tolerences on their system they will charge"

Hi Wayne,

Firstly look here:-

http://bt2700hgv.tripod.com/002.htm

If you just plug the modem in without bothering with the user name and password you can often obtain some very useful data similar to the pictures you'll see here:-

http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,8133.0.html

The diagnostics command sometimes depends upon the firmware version you're using. Please ask again if you are having difficulties.
EDIT to add:-

E.g with firmware version 6.1.1.48.1-enh.tm the browser command is:-

http://192.168.1.254/xslt?PAGE=C_5_3

Note that there are underscore characters between the C_5_3.
You can also access the diagnostics from the menu system from SETTINGS, DIAGNOSTICS, DSL

Kind regards,
Walter

 :shrug2:

Well that's strange. Now my speed has shot up to way over what, "apparently" my line can handle.

Tried the 2700 and got an N1 Vision and tried that aswell, no change.
Then suddenly this afternoon its at 724kbps.
Did a speed test this morning at 8:42 which was 338kbps then this afternoon it's doubled.

Might connect the 2700 again and get some line stats before it slows down again.

Check out the BT speedtest results.

Hi Wayne,

There is clearly something wrong with the BT Speed test results.
Although the error text is not recorded in this version of the documentation it might provide an insight into the BT Speed Tester facilities

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBUQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.btwholesale.com%2Fpages%2Fdownloads%2FCommunity%2FBroadband_Community%2Fpt_customer_handbook_v5.pdf&ei=O2jDTKurMJCTjAeZjqW4BQ&usg=AFQjCNFxCTn4SqYzOVgnr-pbKgwRvLcHDQ

It would be worth posting the 2Wire diagnostic data during high and low speed conditions.

Kind regards,
Walter
