Bishops Stortford
Hertfordshire
GREAT NEWS!
Your exchange is already on the rollout plan for BT Infinity.

December 2010 I believe.
The OpenReach Engineer I was chatting to the other day told me not to hold my breath.
December 2011 might be more realistic he reckoned.

And another engineer told me that the green cabinets are being built in the UK, shipped to China for the electronics to be fitted and then being shipped back. He also reckoned that if BT ripped out all their copper wires and sold them for scrap, the whole fibre rollout would be self-financing, given the present price of copper.

Cheers,
Peter

Have done this again............I am the one and only vote for my exchange.

It is telling me to forget any idea of having FTTC around here as there are less than 1,000 residences connected to that exchange  :(

Is this just more hype from BT  ???

I still maintain that those who already have good speeds will be more likely to see fftc, rather than those who are a long way from exchanges and getting poor speeds.

Talking of large cities.........I live less than 3 miles from Sheffield City Centre and I am lucky to get 2.5MB,so its not just rural area's that struggle with poor speeds.  :)

It might not be small UncleUB but it's north of Watford, and full of country bumpkins like my city. :D

Please read with tongue firmly in cheek.

I was number 7 on the list, I voted a few days ago and it's only at number 9 now !

At this rate my exchange will be upgraded in time for the next millenium  :D

On a more serious note, I wish more people voted  :(

Gentlefolk,

I am not impressed with the publicity asking all those interested to "vote" in order to add some of the PCP cabinets from another 5 exchanges.
The advertisements look pretty until you realise that they have already lost the race to Virgin's superior, but still only 1980s technology.
They are attempting to convince clients (and force all other BT wholesale CPs) to stay on a 1950s twisted pair network using copper and aluminium down to 0.32 mm diameter and (I think) still not offering a Universal Service Commitment for the broadband.
Even if the twisted pair is perfect it's only those with a D side line length of under 1 km who will see a reasonable, but still asymmetric, increase in mainly download speeds.

Given the financial position I can see why they hope to retain their revenues.
I know it's wishful thinking, but wouldn't UK plc be so much better off if only somebody could convince the telecoms industry to follow the moves in developing countries to install FTTH now instead of applying more bodges on such an old network design.

Sorry - end of bleat !

Kind regards,
Walter
