Questions regarding BT Upto 20mb upgrade
« on: October 03, 2010, 01:00:14 PM »

I got an E-mail from BT last week saying good news, we made changes to your exchange and you will now get upto 20mb automatically.
They said no extra cost and it could take 10 days to stabilize
I am still synced @ 8124k so have had no increase whatsoever.

I looked on the BT site and could find no info whatsoever,
so remembered how good kitz-forum is and after finally remembering my password i figured one of the great members here could enlighten me?

Is it free and automatic, or does it involve renewing a contract, finally i am still using a Voyager 220v, is this good enough for upto 20mbs?
it is ADSL2+ so it should support upto 24mbs afaik.

Thanks for any info/replies :D

Hello gs1norwich............and welcome back   :)

For a first step, perhaps you could go to this page ... http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/adslchecker.php ... type in your details and then post back with the result.
Also, could you advise which BT "package" you are on.

You've (possibly) been misled by BT. With an attenuation of 40 dB you're not going to get 20 Mbps or anything even close. About 9000 kbps is as much as you could hope for. You seem to have a slightly raised noise margin, which may be the result of some earlier instability, causing the target noise margin to be increased.

Hmm.
on the upto 8mb service i was rock solid stable..speeds of 900KB/s maximum over http even 700KB/s peak time on BT!!!

i figured i would see some increase, at least according to the email BT sent me

Good news. We’ve just made improvements to your local network so you can get faster broadband at no extra charge.
What’s happening?

We’re upgrading your line so you can get faster broadband – up to 20Mb download speeds. The top speed you can get on your broadband line depends on a few things, like how far you live from your exchange, how many other people are online at the same time, your phone wiring and even interference from appliances in your home.
What do I need to do?

Nothing. We’ll upgrade your broadband automatically. You won’t lose your connection when we upgrade your local exchange but it could take about ten days for your broadband speed to settle down. That's normal. It takes that long to reach its top speed. You can help it along by leaving your Home Hub on all the time and using your broadband as much as you can for the first ten days.

blah blah blah......

There are two key words and they are up to. A very wide statement. It means if you are getting any sync at all you are getting up to 20 meg. I would leave well alone as anything you do to upset the system will end up with a reduction. If you are very patient you may see a slight increase.

Interesting stats, but definitely ADSL2+.
It looks like the line has maybe been capped at the "old" speeds.
However, even if "uncapped" you wouldn't get much more.

Maybe it really is "retraining" and will improve "a little, but not a lot"

Hi GS1,

Unless you are North of the Yare your attenuation seems rather high as is your estimated line distance @ 2.9 km.

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php

It might be worth trying a new modem to see of your attenuation reduces.

Have you done all the optimisation tricks such as those here:-

Kind regards,
Walter

cheers for the replies all.

I am north of the Yare :) (i am still in the 10 day period as stated in the email)
but has already been said if i was on upto 20mb surely i would have a 20000k sync regardless of IP profile/throughput?

Absolutely not, it's distance-related (big time)

Oh no,doesn't work like that I'm afraid......Look at what you have posted.......Upto,not will get, welcome to the real world of UK Broadband.  ;D

As HP sauce has stated,it depends on how far/near you live from the exchange(line attenuation)as to what speeds your line is capable of.Live next door and you're laughing.

The reason I asked about your internal house wiring was that you seem to have quite a few uncorrectable errors so perhaps your line is on the noisy side of fair.
I agree with the others that you're unlikely to achieve a startling improvement but it might be worth a try.

I might be tempted to spend £20 on a 2Wire 2700HGV just to squeeze the last drop out of the line.

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi
As Roseway has said the maximum synch you could expect with 40db attenuation is about 9000Kbps that is with the default 6db Target SNR margin . Your  DS SNR margin is 12.7 db . Each 3db above 6db  can cost up to 1200Kbps , depending on bit loading. With the reduced bit loading due to your attenuation the loss wont be that much  but can easily be 400 to 500Kbps per 3db. in other words your losses could well be around 1000Kbps. If you can get the SNR margin down to 6db , your errors seem a little high for this to happen quickly, you could expect a slight improvement but nothing sensational.

I notice your output power is quite high suggesting your line is at about its limit .

Regards Jeff
