BT's indicative FTTC speeds
« on: October 10, 2010, 02:34:12 PM »

The post code checker gives an indicative estimate of 12.7 to 14.8mbps.

Does anyone know how such estimates are calculated; if it gives any clue to the distance from the cabinet my post code is likely to be?

I suspect not very near.

Hi renulop,

I'm sorry to say I wouldn't put much confidence with any BT estimator.
I've observed countless anomalies with the standard full exchange line ADSL check so I'd be surprised if the FTTC checker can be more than just an "average" line reduction estimator.
I gather that the BT PCP database can show wide variations between the recorded geographic position and the actual one.
One such example in our area gave the PCP postcode over 2 km line distance away from the real position.

Kind regards,
Walter

Hello. I take on board what you mean.  :) I was being totally in theory mode.

But I was thinking that, if FTTC is almost instantaneous from exchange to cabinet, then any loss wold be due to cable from cabinet to property. So the proposedcabinet could be some way.

I put it down to my old age naivety.  ;)

You're absolutely correct in that; as the ADSL equipment (i.e. the DSLAM) is now in a "local cabinet" the twisted pair line is made significantly shorter so less problem with attenuation and noise.
However if you're out in the sticks, your line length from the PCP green cabinet can be anything up to 4 or 5 Km still.
In your case it could be much shorter upon the assumption that you have a reasonable broadband service already.

Kind regards,
Walter

Not bad compared to some ;D

Connect 7200 with 47 attenuation on 2+ and about 1.75 mls from exch
