Weaver:
Not forgetting a couple of Microsoft's own free tools

1) Web-browser-based simple scanner -
Windows Live Onecare Safety Scanner - http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm
which is strongly recommended as it doesn't pollute your machine, slow it down or make it unreliable by interfering with its normal operation long term, because you just run it and then close the program and it doesn't remain permanently running.

2) For WinXp / Server 2003 users _only_: Microsoft's Windows Defender is a free antispyware/malware tool of the "resident" type
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx
and is also very well behaved. It does some 'live' monitoring for certain changes and does scheduled scans. It does come with a certain cost in terms of performance but this can be minimised as its schedule for running scans is customisable and this flexibility can be exploited to make a big difference.

I am getting regular reminders to update my Free AVG v 9 with AVG 2011. As is usual with these new updates I'm hanging on until any bugs have been corrected. Has anyone here tried it yet and what do they think?
Tony

HPsauce:
I've installed a couple of copies. OK so far and "seems" to include better Spyware protection than before.

tonyappuk:
Thanks, HP.
