Microsoft Safety Scanner  http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-gb/default.aspx

If you think you have a virus/malware problem the download and run the free scanner. The application is changed every 10 days, just download a new version as needed.

AVG 2012 Standalone LinkScanner

I put in a strong plug for AVG 2012 Standalone LinkScanner.  It works well with other firms' AV software and provides good extra defence from web borne threats.  It is also resource light.

PC Pro magazine (March 2013, issue 221) has reviewed 16 security suites.  Is speaks glowingly of Avast! free (version 7) which turns in a performance little inferior to BitDefender and Trend Micro Platinum but is a free product.  It speaks far from glowingly about AVG free 2013 and contrasts the dim performance of AVG 2013 against AVG 2012 which it recommended in 2012.

Of particular note is the performance of Avast! in preventing damage by zero day threats.  It scores 98% in comparison with 100% for both BitDefender and Trend Micro Platinum.  Avast!'s Behaviour Shield is coming into its own.

MSE was found to be a tail-end Charlie with respect to protection performance.

Please consider the following two very useful security tools: -
1.  MalwareBytes Anti-Exploit  https://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?/forum/142-news-questions-and-comments/
2.  CryptoPrevent  https://www.foolishit.com/vb6-projects/cryptoprevent/

The respective web sites explain.  I use both of these.  Anti-Exploit protect web browsers and Java in real-time for free.  Both are designed to work with Windows XP and later.

EMET 4 and 5 users will find that EAF and ROP mitigations will probably need to be disabled for those apps protected by Anti-Exploit.  If any have problems with this, please PM me.
