Sync - & - Throughput
« on: September 18, 2010, 04:50:10 PM »

Hi   :)

This is a bit hard to explain   ???
But I'm trying to help someone on another forum.

Someone was asking me about AOL Upto 24 mbps.
As he believed himself to be on AOL Upto 8 mbps - & - Wanted to know if it would cost more money to upgrade to Upto 24 mbps.
Note: For the actual Broadband Side of Things... AOL Upto 8 mbps - OR - AOL Upto 24mbps ... Can Both = £14.99

But when this person posted his routers stats...
Sync... Down = 12004 | Up = 1020
SNR...  Down = 3.4 | Up = 7.0
Attenuation... Down = 29.0 | Up = 11.3
&.... ADSL2Plus
Well this to me looks like he's already on Upto 24 mbps  :-\

Trouble Is!
His Throughput Is... Down = 7.70 mbps | Up 0.82 mbps

Could it be that AOL have upgraded him to ADSL2+ ( Hence the Sync of 12004 ) But capping him at 8 mbps ?
Because he hasn't actually agreed to an Upto 24 mbps contract yet.
Note...
Bit Like Talk Talk Have The Essentials Package.
But then I think they have to get the Now Free Speed Boost to actually lift the cap of 8 mbps - & - be able to get Upto 24 mbps.
OR
Is it more likely that he's just getting bad speeds because of Noise on the line or something?
Note: His Down Noise Margin Was Only... 3.4

Note...
His Stats From Kitz Calculator
Downstream Attenuation = 29
Approx Line Length = 2.1 km
adsl2+ (LLU) = 16000
Throughput 14160

Basically!
Is it possible to Sync at 12 mbps .. But still only be on an Upto 8 mbps contract?
Guess I should have just asked that to start with

Thanks!

Zoe

Yes, it's possible for the ISP to cap the download (or upload) speed. I don't know if AOL do this, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Hi Eric  :)

One half of me thinks...
If he hasn't entered a contract for Upto 24 mbps .. Then he's not likely to be getting Upto 24mbps

However!
This persons UP Speeds are definitely that of an ADSL2+ connection.
His... Up Sync = 1020
&
His... Up Throughput = 0.82 mbps
Exactly the same as what I can get.

His DOWN Sync Speed is definitely that of an ADSL2+ connection too.
His Sync = 12004
My Sync = 12610

I'm AOL .. Upto 24mbps
But as you can see from a speed test done earlier today... Don't always get good speed test results  :'(

So!
Is his AOL connection capped at 8 mbps  :-\
If there's No Way of telling by just looking at router stats.
Guess the only way he could be Certain...
1) See if he ever gets a Speed Test with a Down Speed over 8 mbps.
2) Phone AOL and ask them.
Think number 2 is what he's trying to avoid!

Thanks!
