Old BT Master socket wiring question?
« on: September 01, 2010, 12:28:35 PM »

Hi all,   the master socket in my house is quite old ~20yrs. When the bottom cover is removed there is no test socket, no user IDCs just a PCB with two fixing screws.Using a borrowed insulated endoscope I can see four wires connected at the back .
    Orange wire-----> term A
    White    wire-----> term B
Black wire   ------> term 3 (IDC)
Green wire ------> term 4 (IDC)
I hope this is clear.. It looks as though the IDC wires are used to connect a JB downstairs via the outside sealed BT JB.
Is this good practice to route the extension wiring in the same cable as the incoming pair?
I would prefer to route the ext. from the master skt to the downstairs JB inside the house, but this means interfering with the master skt. terms which I should not do?
Been having some drops on my ADSL+2 connection lately just trying to eliminate any possible causes.  Stats:-
     DSL Connection

Any ideas would be appreciated thanks.

Your router is not connected at ADSL2+.....it's ADSL2 = G.992.3 so there's something wrong. Also the connection is on a 9dB Target SNR instead of the default 6dB. Is this a capped O2 Standard connection ?

It certainly looks like the extension wiring is causing the problems but with that set up, I'm afraid it's a BT job to rectify.....a good time to ask for an NTE5 main linebox !

Find an Openreach person in a street near you, and ask them, or BT would try to charge you £200.

Thank you for your replies...yep! it's O2 pay monthly (Premium).
Router shows "O2_ADSLplus"?... plus what?
As you correctly said Oranged it shows G.992.3...I'll see what O2 gotta say about this !

I am not holding my breath on this one...seems things may not be quite as they first appear.

When this was first "installed" there was no internet. Obviously it's good enough for voice traffic (Phones are ok) but I wonder about crosstalk / errors my neighbour has the same router /isp but does not seem to get any "glitches".her wiring is direct to the master skt no messin with spare pairs.

As an aside I got a polyphase 132Kv pylon about 70m away runs parallel to the phone cable.. :(  I've no idea if this is influencing the signal or not?

Thanks anyway .

I'll see what O2 gotta say about this
O2 will say, you have a rubbish line and the exchange equipment has automatically dropped you from ADSL2+ (G.992.5) to ADSL2 (.3) in order to work at all.
ADSL2+ needs a good quality connection and the "handshaking" when you turn the router on tests that and it's obviously not good enough in your case.

Getting the wiring "regularised" would be an excellent first step; you might get nearer 9mbps if everything was resolved.

I'm on the same O2 package with almost the same attenuation as yours using O2's TG585v7 on firmware 8.2.7.7 (the very latest)

Here's my stats :

DSL Type:   G.992.5 annex A
Maximum Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   1,326 / 12,412
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:   1,321 / 9,950
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]:   0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:   12.0 / 19.0
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:   19.5 / 38.5
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:   7.0 / 6.5
Vendor ID (Local/Remote):   TMMB / BDCM
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote):   0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote):   0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote):   0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote):   0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote):   0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down):   29 / 986
CRC Errors (Up/Down):   29 / 0
HEC Errors (Up/Down):   15,846 / 0

As HPsauce says, get your wiring sorted first otherwise if O2 get BT involved it will cost you as everything is pointing to the old wiring+lineboxes in your property.

Thanks for the suggestions,   Oranged how did you update the firmware is this not automatic?

Software Release: 7.4.20.5 this is obviously out of date> :o

Does this update give your stats a reading of..."Maximun Bandwidth" ?  can't see it on mine (TG585 v7)  .
I have noticed I'm back on G .995 annex A today just for a change! (nice and sunny now?).
Going to disconnect extension lines at the JB in the hall later this will eliminate some of the old wiring...(my side of the Master skt.)

Am I likely to notice any immediate changes or do I have to wait the 10 day thingy ?

regards,

With O2 LLU your stats should change immediately if appropriate.

Yes, they are working through, area by area > http://broadband.o2.co.uk/broadbandstatus/view/

Software Release: 7.4.20.5 this is obviously out of date> :o

There's been 8.2.23.0 and now 8.2.7.7

Correct, it's not available on any previous firmware

Thanks for the information ,

Disconnected at the downstairs JB no great difference  just a slight increase (0.4meg.) :(  all other stats remained the same.
I am 2.5km from the exchange so am not really expecting miracles!

But I have a similar attenuation and the Kitz page gives my distance as 2.9Km by road and 2.07Km direct.

No, as I and HPsauce have said, your internal wiring needs to be sorted then your router will sync nearer to 9000kbps.
