Moved Home
« on: August 22, 2010, 09:06:10 PM »

Hi all

Long time noe see.

I have just moved home and have stayed with BT for my broadband.  I am connected at just under 7mb but the internet is running slowly.  I have contacted BT and they say it's slow because the broadband is stabilizing on the line and it could take upto 10 days to settle.  I have run speed tests and it says i am getting 0.3mb connection

I am currently using the BT Home hub 2.0

Should i wait out for 7 more days or is there a problem with the line?

Hi
quote I am connected at just under 7mb

If your connection speed was low / changing then Ok it would be training . As far as I know that does not apply to throughput .(someone may know otherwise ?)Your 8max connection is OK .There seems to be something else wrong ,Not your connection.

I agree with Jeff that something isn't quite right. However it's certainly not worth rushing at the problem.
The upstream margin, power and attenuation seem unusual.

I don't buy BT's excuse as the training operation usually starts high and drops.

Let's see if anyone else comes up with other ideas.

I would do the usual local things:-

BT speedtest so you see what your IP profile is and check at different times of the day and evening
17070 Option 2 Quiet Line test
Run the modem direct from the test socket and don't change things too frequently.
Check for bell wires and star wiring

Kind regards,
Walter

Hi all

Thanks all for the advice.  The home hub is directly plugged into the socket, i have even tried changing the filter and the modem cable.  still with no luck of the speed getting any better.  I have tried BT support again and the advisors in the call centre in TIMBUCKTOO just seem like they are following a script on screen!!!!!  :-[  call me impatient but even if the broadband is settling on the line i shouldn't be getting speeds of under half a meg SURELY NOT

Hi Panomania,

They ARE following a script with strict rules. I suggest one rule is "IF Punter-Connect time > 10 days, then instruct Punter to P... Off" !

You do need the IP Profile though.
Might I suggest you try escalating the problem and asking that they explain EXACTLY why the throughput is so low with a sync speed so high.

Kind regards,
Walter

Expanding somewhat on my necessarily brief postings above, for which apologies.
If you're within the initial 10 days you will, as Walter has explained, be totally wasting your time calling BT. Except maybe for total loss of service.

As advised, it may be "interesting" to run the BT Speed Tester at regular intervals (daily?) and post the results here, especially the IP Profile. Other than that you really will just have to wait.

And do not change anything, this can have BAD consequences. Just leave the router on all the time.

I suspect BT may not have initiated the training period properly, but there's nothing that can be done until it's over. Give it 2 weeks from activation.

Run the BT speedtester

www.speedtester.bt.com

There is some good info here about IP profiles
