Hi

quote : When they are OFF Line .. My Noise Margin = 8db - to - 7db
When they are ON Line .. My Noise Margin = 5db - to - 3db

Well that is quite strange . I would Not expect any difference . I have about six neighbours all connecting to the same pole . Whether they are connected or not makes no difference to my SNR margin .If one single neighbour can seriously affect your   connection  then I wonder how ADSL can possibly work in an urban environment.

Zoe

You can Hide (not broadcast) your SSID.

Given that they don`t sound the sharpest chisels in the toolbox, they`ll likely think they`ve beaten you.

But you can have a nice smug grin as you see their SSID...but they don`t see yours.

Hi  :)

@ Jeff

Don't understand it myself
Maybe the two lines are touching somewhere ( OR... Something! )
About 13 years ago... Heavy snow brought down all the phone lines in the street.
Perhaps they were put back up by a very cold engineer in a rush - & - The two lines are hooked up at the top of the pole. ( OR... Something! )  :-\
NOTE: Few Weeks Ago... When the neighbours phone temporarily went dead due to rain getting in where the dog bit...
My mum was on the phone to my uncle and said she could hardly hear a word he said due to an echo on the line. ( Could hear her own voice coming back at her )

@ stevie

They Do Sometimes Hide Their SSID
Like a Yo-yo!
They... Hide One Day - & - UnHide The Next Day.
Don't know why they bother!
Coz... I Can Still See Their SSID
The only person they're hiding from is themselves.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Note!
There's approx 15 wireless routers in my street.
There can be 5 to 15 routers showing at any one time.
Only one family in the street constantly mess with their router.
My Next Door Neighbour  >:(

Thanks!

Hi again Zoe!

This is only a (very) long shot, but...................

It is possible, when the blown down lines were repaired the wiring in the local junction may have become crossed.  Do you notice any particular background noise when on a phone call?

A few years ago, at a previous address, we kept hearing a faint voice in the background when on a call - usually the same voice!  It took 4 years!!!!! of trying with BT to get it sorted with them making every excuse in the book, plus several engineer visits.  Eventually an 'old hand' BT engineer turned up, tested from our end and found the fault in 5 minutes!  All the local cables in our road met in various junction boxes in the street before being routed to the area box.  Our 'twin' pair had been mixed up with that of a neighbour and our 'earth' had been twinned with their 'live' (crossed legs, the engineer called it!) hence we could hear them in the background (if it had been the other way round, they would have heard us).  Plus, our connection to the internet (dial-up at the time) kept dropping out, whenever the other line was being used, the 'noise' being the culprit.  I imagine broadband would be affected in much the same way.

It might be worth getting a line check done, if you haven't done so already, to eliminate this possibility?

Sorry about the log-winded story!

Good luck

Sorry about the log-winded story!

Not a long winded story at all  ;)
Think you're probably... Spot On!

It's got to be something like that.
As there is no other explanation for what's happening  :-\

I only started to suspect something was mixed up with mine and our neighbours line... On the day they first started fiddling with it about 2 moths ago.
They started Pulling - & - My Attenuation started changing. ( Going... UP! )
Eventually I started to convince myself that the change in Attenuation... Was probably just due to the change in the weather.
But when their telephone line was Cut completely - & - My noise margin shot up to 8.1db .... Then I knew it couldn't just be a coincidence

Years ago when I was a child we used to sometimes here people talking like ghosts on the phone.
But... Then it Stopped!

However!
in the last 12 months... Intermittent Crackle On The Line.
In the last 4 months... Intermittent Echo on the Line. ( Our own voice comes back at us )
NOTE: I have complained to AOL .. But they wouldn't believe me.
In The End... They did send an engineer out.
But I know now that the engineer was just a Qube Engineer .. Meaning AOL were just Fobbing me Off  >:(

Note!
Next door is one of those family's that do what they want regardless of the cost or risk to others.
Their house is wired to the hilt - With Extremely Dodgy... DIY Wiring!
Never mind their telephone wiring.
They are Constantly....
Rewiring ( Adding ) Electrics.
Rewiring ( Adding ) Telephone Line Extensions.
Rewiring ( Adding ) Sky Stuff!
Moving Radiators.
Knocking Down Walls.
Their whole house is a... Time Bomb!  :o

Thanks!

Zoe
